I am absolutely tickled pink at the training I received Monday afternoon, September 8. Muscogee County has purchased the nettrekker database for ALL students in the county. Not only does this give us access to amazing content, but parents and students can access this wonderful resource at home. Unfortunately, I cannot give you the username and password on this site--because that would allow ANYONE to access it! Please look in your child's Wednesday's Week's Worth of Work folder for all the details!
Oh--just wait until you click on the portfoilios that I set up this afternoon. If your child is having any difficulty with place value, just wait until you see what is available. AND--you can set up the system to READ the articles to you! You can choose an option that will allow you to get a dictionary definition of any word in an article. OH, my--you just won't believe it! I'm always just an e-mail away. You are welcome to try pmontarella@mcsdga.net but some e-mail from unrecognized sources goes into my SPAM folder--which I can only access from home! (varies from person to person--Mrs. Moore can only access HER SPAM at school!) If you use the link on this Schoolnotes page, it will be delivered directly to my school email. (at the address above) I usually respond to email within 24 hours during the school week. Since I am usually at school about 10 hours each day, I do not accept phone calls at home. Feel free to call the school (706) 748-2660. The secretary or clerk will leave a message in my box. i usually respond to phone calls within 24 hours during the school week. Although I try to respond to questions that take "just a minute", it is sometimes difficult to give a good response in front of other students and/or parents. If in doubt, I will err on the side of saying something is "fine" if it means that I will avoid embarassing a child. Also, consider that 3 or 4 people taking "just a minute" can add up to a 10 minute delay to our day. I can usually schedule a conference within a couple of days. If it is a true emergency, Mrs. Shaw-Powell or Mrs. Moore will help me arrange coverage to meet sooner. Muscogee County will be working on our server and some of our online services, so we may be without AR for 2 weeks, starting Monday, September 8. I recommend that students keep a log of books read while we are unable to access the AR tests. I believe that students will benefit more by continuing to read--they might miss a few questions by not testing immediately after completing a book, but they will probably gain enough points to compensate for that. I will provide a log for the students. Please help them enter the name and author of the book. The author helps identify the test if books have the same title. The level is also a handy indicator. (Students do not need to record stories from our reading series. I will remind them of those read during the "down" time.) Oh--that reminds me! I ordered a complete class set of one title for our class with points earned from our first Scholastic bookclub order. I also ordered one set (1 or each title) of "Class from the Black Lagoon" books and two sets of the "A to Z Mysteries." When we combine those with some sets from our school library, every student should be enjoying at least 2 or 3 "real books" as part of their reading program and AR testing. I was able to buy a class set of a Thanksgiving mystery and a Christmas/Holiday (actually covers holidays from 5 cultures) book with last year points. Keep those orders coming--although I have chosen a few classroom tools and some teacher's books with points, I am now working on your child's classroom library. What a great beginning we had with that first order! Help Double Churches earn money just by cutting off a little "Boxtop" for Education. Without buying anything different, I probably clip 3 to 5 boxtops each week. For more information go to: www.boxtops4education.com Each boxtop is worth 10 cents. There are also regular sweepstakes you can enter everyday for a month or so--for 10,000 or 25,000 or 100,000 boxtops! I enter regularly--hoping to earn a nice chunk of change for DCE! I have been saying for years that this is the most-overlooked opportunity to raise money for our school. Although you COULD get more points by purchasing the products listed on the site, I have not ever bought anything just because it had a boxtop on it. A couple of the items that I buy regularly are Old El Paso taco products and Kleenex. You just have to remember to cut the boxtop off the bottom of the Kleenex box before you throw it away! So--start clipping and send those boxtops in! I believe our ladies in charge (Mrs. Rouse and Mrs. Tucker) submit the boxtops twice each year, and I know that the cutoff for the second submission is well before the end of the year--April, I'm thinking. Remember: You may access the Ledger Enquirer free online through the Newspaper in Education program. Go to: www.ledger-enquirer.com You can also skip the first step by going to: Password: read Take a few minutes to check out what you can do--read an article, share an article by e-mailing it, or save to a folder. You will also see other educational sites which link from the newspaper page. Enjoy! (The link is saved above on Link #14.) Saturday morning note, September 6: Correction to one homework item: The Language Arts assignment should be page 64, not 164. Since homework is not due until Thursday, students will write a correction in their agenda on Monday and the assignment will still be due on Thursday. Thanks for sending me notes about early check-outs, reasons for absences, and changes in after-school pickup! We realize that last-minutes changes are necessary at times and our secretary and clerk are willing to relay emergency messages--so don't hesitate to call when you need to. Remember to keep your information current: Please send changes of address, phone numbers, people who can pick up your child, etc. We want to be able to contact you, and we certainly want to release children to everyone you trust with that responsibility (and no one else!). I know the new grading system is a matter of adjustment for all of us. I think the greatest advantage to this new approach is that specific skills are measured. You might have noticed that on a recent assignment in which children had to write sentences, two specific skills were assessed: 1) mechanics: Did you child begin each sentence with a capital and use an appropriate ending mark. 2) grammar: Did subjects and verbs agree? Some students received 3 (met the standard) because they remembered the basic mechanics and 1(did not meet the standard) because they wrote sentences such as "The boys wants to play." You will notice that I list the standard being addressed for each numerical assessment. I am finding the change a challenge--simply because it's a change, but I AM excited that a child will be assessed in such a way that a B or C average will not obscure excellence in some areas and poor performance in others. Recognizing the specific skills will help us teachers provide needs-based instruction. We won't waste time on standards that everyone has mastered, and we will focus on areas of need--whether those are standards specifically included in the second grade curriculum or gaps in areas that should have been mastered previously. (Sometimes this is simply a matter of students moving from another school system in which the order of instruction is different.) This new system will also give you a very complete overview of your child's progress in all areas of instruction. Again, please remember that we are one of 17 school piloting the new report cards. (And not all of them are piloting K-2 as DCE is.) We are the "pioneers" in Muscogee County, so please feel free to respond to the new system. We will have opportunities to offer feedback, and I would appreciate input from parents and other caring adults. Ah--here we go: Second grade is going ahead full-steam! I hope to schedule parent conferences (with anyone who has not had one) within the next two weeks. I will send home a note with a pre-arranged time. If that time is not convenient for you, simply respond with "can't attend" and provide the most convenient days and times for you. I can generally meet as early as 8:00 a.m. and as late as 5:40. I try to avoid Monday mornings and Friday afternoons. 8~) The following post will be deleted when I post the next message: (Generally, I leave the two latest posts. The supply list is always here--at the very bottom of the page!)This
note is being sent home with every student AND posted on my School Notes
page. To
