Our goal this month: Literary Devices and Text Structure
Everyday will start with 35-40 minutes of silent reading/journaling then Ch. 1 viewing and discussion before the lesson begins. The following consists of the lesson portion of class:

PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO THE DUE DATES: 11/13-book due; 11/20- Journal 1; 12/1-Journal 2; 12/9-Journal 3; 12/16-Journal 4 AND 1/15- CD and Lyrics due. For the lyrics: it must describe an event in the book. For the song titles: 12 songs are events and must be in SEQUENTIAL ORDER.

M: Current Events Magazine: Read and discuss parts of the story, text features and features of text T: Analogy notes and practice. Students will be given notes about what an analogy is and what types of analogies are used. They will be given examples and review in pairs prior knowledge and just learned information to complete the analogy pairs W: LAB DAY: Short practice on Odyssey with analogies; review rough draft plot story and begin typing it in the lab. (Found on INB page 12/13) R: Review Analogies in small groups. Students will be given certain types of analogies and work together to solve by creating their own analogies that fit the correct type. Students will pair and share with other students and create analogy word patterns to "stump the peer" in class F: Analogy and Homophone Test 11/9-11/13 M: Review Homophone/analogy quiz Read short story (based on Veterans Day) and answer discussion questions based on literary elements. Ex- character, setting, plot, point of view,etc T: Revisit story questions, discuss key points. Students will create an ending for the short story based on discovery questions, if time, will illustrate.Share with a peer W: LAB: Students will continue working on typing up plot stories in the computer lab. R: Hyperbole: notes and practice- how does this type of writing/description influence literature and authors purpose for writing. F: Deductive Reasoning Activities 11/16-20 M: Current Events Magazine: Students will read the entire magazine as a class. We will discuss text structures and features along with breaking down the parts of the magazine.Notes on text structures T: Students will answer questions and complete activities based on the current event magazine. Focus: Text structure in non-fiction W: LAB: Students will work on text structures in Odyssey and will create samples of correct use of text structures in writing R: Similie and Metaphor Practice: Students will take notes on these two literary devices and will then complete a practice activity that demonstrates mastery of both F: Antonyms and Synonyms Practice and Activity using the Thesaurus HAVE A GREAT TURKEY BREAK! |
