Weeks of FEBRUARY 1st and February 8th, 2010 **Please note that homework scheduled for the week of Feb. 1st, will now be homework for the week of Feb. 8th. There will be no homework for the rest of our school week except for our continued reading. Valentine's Day will be celebrated on Friday, February 12th. Of course, we do not have a party. What we will do is decorate a bag for our valentines and students can bring those in beginning Feb. 8th. We are reading The Chocolate Touch, and we will return to our studies on matter, for a short time, as we study the process of chocolate-from beans to chocolate. We will then enjoy some chocolate and will view a short movie, Chocolate Fever. We will also open our valentines that day. If you walked through our classroom on Friday you would be saying "Mmm-good!" We read about, and then ate STONE SOUP! The children had such a good time saying, 'Fancy that! A soup made from a stone!" This is what the old lady said in our story. What fun! Another treat we enjoyed is Mrs. Taylor, our AIG teacher at Landis, who came to work with us as we continue to learn and apply, our 12 most powerful words. We completed our math assessments. This coming week we will review geometry and we will begin learning to tell time in five minute intervals. Please work with your child on this skill at home too. We are now reading 25 minutes each night to obtain our goal of reading 20 books this quarter. Children may continue writing summaries, or complete a project (a letter went home concerning this on Friday). Please encourage your child to read the various genres that are on the chart. I will send home an "informational book" with the children this week to help them with this genre of reading. This week will be another great week. Reading reward in on Wednesday. Most of the children made their goal for second quarter and will be rewarded with a winter theme party. They will enjoy "dirty snowballs," a fun icy treat to eat! Due to the missed day this past week, students WILL attend school on Feb. 15th, a day that had been scheduled as a workday.
