Weeks of November 16th and 23rd

This week we welcomed a new student in our room.  Several children (three in fact) have moved since the beginning of school, so we are happy to have someone new.  Welcome Ethan!

We are learning new reading strategies in our school right now as well as "12 powerful words;" two that we focused on this week with our story OWL MOON were compare and contrast.  We compared and contrasted owls to bats.  We also learned the word nocturnal, and found that there were many creatures who are active during the night and sleep during the day.

In math we are reviewing and we have begun our county-wide math assessmentSecond grade decided to allow the children plentyof time with less stress by doing these assessment in small groups.  We will complete these assessments this week.

This week we will emphasize fables and wonder why these stories have been handed down from generation to generation. We will ask the essential question: What is their importance in today's world?

We are also learning about people and government in our social studies.  The children have even created their own "vote for me" posters.  This week the emphasis will be on rules and lawsWe will compare and contrast the laws of the community to the rules in our classroom.  We will ask this essential question: Why are laws and rules important?

Don't forget that BOOK FAIR is the week of November 16th!  Our class will go to the fair to "look" on the 17th, and to "buy" on the 19th; however, parents may attend with their child anytime this week from 7:30 until 1:30.  An excellent time to attend, though, would be TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17th-FAMILY OR CURRICULUM NIGHT at our school. Please come from 6:00-7:30 p.m. and learn some reading and math strategies to help your child this year.  Second grade will share our strategies from 6:00-6:45 THEN you can ATTEND THE BOOK FAIR which is open until 7:30!  We so hope you can join us for a FUN and INFORMATIVE night!

Due to the Family Night, I have limited homwork this week.  I have sent only 10 spelling words home.  Homework will be as follows:

Monday-Write words in agenda.  Read for 20 minutes.

Tuesday-NO HOMEWORK

Wednesday-Write (on notebook sheet provided) sentences using spelling words.  Underline the word. Read 20 minutes.

Thursday-Study spelling words.  Read for 20 minutes.

The week of November 23rd there will be NO homework.

Also, on that Monday, the 23rd, the second grade teachers will rotate the classes as we  enjoy learning about the first Thanksgiving , Native Americans, etc.

Please remember that on Tuesday, the 24th, there will be an early dismissal for teacher professional development.

There will be no school on WEDNESDAY, NOV. 25TH, THURSDAY, NOV. 26TH, AND FRIDAY NOV. 27th.  WE HOPE EVERYONE HAS A GREAT THANKSGIVING!
