October 2008

Dear KO Families,

It has been quite a busy month in our classroom.  Your children are doing a wonderful job!  They all seem to be adjusting to the routine of their new kindergarten life.  I am so proud of how hard they are working.

Our Kid Writing Workshop is beginning to run somewhat smoother.  The children are beginning to understand the workshop and the procedures during this time.  Please continue to work with your child at home on stretching out our words.  We are learning what good writers do.  They say a word and they stretch out that word then write the letters that they hear (they may not be correct, but they should write what they hear).  Good writers also put “meatball spaces” between their words.  We also remember to use the room and our word wall to help us spell special words. I have listed the three words (below) that we’ve celebrated in our classroom.  We typically add three to five words a week.  Once those words are on the word wall, your child is responsible for knowing how to recognize and spell those words.

I am currently conducting assessments that will help me when I begin organizing the reading groups.  This is a long process, but during this time your child is participating in learning centers.  At these “stations”, they are working on those skills that were previously taught during our Literacy Block.

The children love our Everyday Math program.  This is a time to work on our number recognition, place value, calendar activities and so much more.  This is a class favorite.  Each child will get an opportunity to be the “Calendar Boy/Girl” and they will be the “teacher” for the week.  They love it!  We are counting and recognizing numbers to 35, counting by 2’s and 10’s, we are also learning to count backwards and truly understand what that means.  My goal for this time is for your child to develop a true number sense and an understanding of how numbers work together.

In Social Studies, we are continuing our unit on Community.  We are starting with our classroom community first.  Our first activity was the “Bag About Me”, which helped us to learn about our new friends.   We are learning how we should treat others in our classroom and how working together makes our community happy and safe for everyone.

Our Balls and Ramps unit in Science is also a class favorite.  The children never knew how much you could learn from observing the properties of a ball. They thought they you could just bounce them and that’s it!  They are so amazed to see how much you could learn from a ball, if you explored very carefully.

Please remember to send the blue folder back and forth to school each day.  If you have any notes for me, just place them in the folder and return it to school on the following day.

Our field trip is scheduled for Tuesday October 28th; please remember to send in a bag lunch with your child.  The cafeteria will not provide lunch on that day.  We will be leaving to go to Freddy Hill Farm at 9:30 am.  We will return to school at 12:45 pm.  Please dress your child in warm clothing; I’m sure it will be a breezy fall day.  We are very excited about our first trip.  Thank you to everyone who volunteered to go on our field trip, unfortunately we could not take everyone.  If you were not selected to go, the room moms will contact you again to see how you can volunteer in our classroom in another way.  If you have any questions, about volunteering for parties, field trips or donations please speak with one our room moms.  They are Julie Donovan, Bryn Prieston, and Jessica Rodriguez.  Thanks for volunteering your time!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Warmest Regards,
Mrs. O’Brien
