Greetings from the Vocal Music Department of CGMS! Welcome to all my new 3rd quarter students. We are starting with a "bang" as the 7th and 8th grade chorus prepares to sing "Firework" for our upcoming talent show. We are also working hard on learning how to read and write music. and how to sing with correct posture and diaphragmatic breathing. During the month of February, we will also concentrate on music from Africa and how it led to American blues, jazz and rock. Our first concert on Thursday, October 20 took place at Corriher-Lipe Middle School and was a resounding success. THANKS to everyone who contributed at the door. We raised $200 to purchase music and a new CD/MP3 player for our music room. Our winter concert took place on Tuesday, DECEMBER 20, 7:30 PM, at Cornerstone Assembly Activity Center just off Webb Road. All choruses, grades 6, 7, and 8 participated and we raised another $300 that covered our registration for Carowinds Music Festival and purchased more music for this spring's concerts. 6th Graders are currently writing an essay on what they want to be when they grow up. This is due is due by Friday, February 10. There should be a first paragraph telling what their dream is and three reasons why. The second paragraph should include at least three sentences, and give more information about the first reason. The third paragraph should support the second reason, and the fourth paragraph, the third and final reason. The final paragraph, number five, should summarize the paper, and tell how they hope to accomplish their goal. Our annual talent show will be held on Monday night, February 20, 7:00 PM at Corriher-Lipe Middle School auditorium. All choruses will perform one number for the show, followed by 16 different acts ranging from guitar to piano to dance and vocals. Admission is $5, with chorus and band students who are performing paying only $3. Children 3 and under are free. All contestants should be present for a dress rehearsal at Corriher-Lipe by 5:00 PM February 20. The Rowan County Middle School Honors Chorus will present their concert on Friday, March 9, at 6:30 PM in the Corriher-Lipe Middle School Auditorium. Admisson is free. Our spring concert will be held at The Event Center on Webb Road on May 10. Plan now to attend! 8th grade choruses from both semesters this year will go to Carowinds to sing in the annual Music Festival on Friday, May 18. Put this date on your calendars. I will send home a detailed letter with the ticket order form by February 15. To ALL my former students: good luck in high school, college, or in "life!" Please visit whenever you can. Never give up on your dreams. Pursue excellence in everything you do, and always, ALWAYS, keep a song in your heart. Make this world a little better place for your having been here! Mrs. B.
