Language Arts/ Science Syllabus    ---   Mrs. Griffin 2009 – 2010

Note:  Always bring your Spelling, Vocabulary, and Easy Grammar books to LA class!

Literature Book

  • Stories in the literature book will be read in class.
  • Various literature concepts will be taught with each story.
  • Vocabulary used in the story must be learned and will be part of the selection test.
  • When the stories are read in class, pay close attention to vocabulary, characters, setting, plot, climax, and resolution.

Independent Reading

  • Three books are to be read independently each quarter.
  • Approximately 3 weeks will be given for independent reading of each book.
  • The due date for writing the summary will be posted on the board and on schoolnotes.com.
  • The summary will include at least three paragraphs.  The first paragraph is the thesis statement; the second paragraph gives the characters, important details, climax of the story, and resolution; and the third paragraph tells your reaction to the story.
  • Take notes and study these notes before the due date because the summaries will be hand written in class.

Spelling

  • The four pages are to be completed as homework and turned in on Friday.
  • Each completed page is worth 25 points.
  • Points will be deducted for mistakes in spelling, handwriting, and wrong answers.
  • There will be a deduction of 20 points for each page not completed.
  • The spelling test will be on Thursday (7th) and Friday (8th) each week.

Vocabulary

  • Each unit in the vocabulary book will be completed prior to the test.
  • The pages will be discussed in class and at least two days will be allowed for study before the test.

Grammar

  • Most of the Easy Grammar pages will be completed in class, but some pages will be assigned as homework.
  • You will need to have a yellow highlighter available to highlight prepositional phrases.
  • Eighth Graders will not have an Easy Grammar Book.  Worksheets will be given.

Writing

  • Two – three major writings per quarter will be worked on in class.
  • Most of these writings will require the final draft to be typed.

Science

  • Read the section in the science book after every lecture.
  • Look for a suitable science/academic fair project.
  • Study sessions will be at 7:30 the morning before a big test.

(Assignments will be posted on schoolnotes.com each evening)
