Units of Study said that three with as Wednesday boy from has house January 2010 NewsletterMrs. Simmons & Mrs. Smith 1st Grade Families, I hope everyone had a wonderful break! It was nice to see the snow come and go. I can’t believe there is only 5 months until summer break. This school year seems to be going by way to fast. There is a lot more for your child to learn before the school year is up. I hope to continue to have your help in educating your child. As I have mentioned before your child will have more homework starting next week. I will be sending home a letter that tells you what to do each night with your child. The homework is not that much more. It will be some spelling and math. This will help prepare your child for the homework they will have in second grade. Continue to read nightly with your child, study sight words, math facts and spelling words. If you have any questions about the homework or anything else please let me know. The second nine weeks will end on January 12th. Your child needs to be at a DRA level 8 by this time. Your child’s occur level as of today is ________. I will be testing some students this week to try to increase their reading level. Report Cards will come home on January 26th. It is very important that your child reads every night. If your child had trouble while reading, you should have them read the book again. Let your child sound out words and try to say the word before you tell them. Also once your child has finished reading have them tell you about the story. (Who was in the story, where they were at, and what happened.) This helps with the comprehension part of reading. Telling what happened in the order it happened is the best way. What your child will be learning in January…We will be reading books about winter and winter animals. Students will be measuring in math, as well as adding and subtracting numbers. In writing students will work on writing small moments, spelling, sentences, punctuation, editing, and revising what they have written. In science students will be working with solids and liquids and the different properties of each. Social Studies will be focus on continents, maps, bodies of water, holidays, historical events and traditions in communities. Students will be out of school on January 15th and January 18th.
Homework Each week the students will have homework. I will send home a list on the first day of each week with what they are to do each night of that week. I have planned it out so that the students do not have so much to do each night. For example, math facts and sight words are not a nightly thing. However, if you know that your child needs more work in those areas then I suggest that they study more than twice a week. Students are to read every night, sight words and math facts are to be studied twice a week, and there will be a math sheet due once a week. Spelling and high frequency words should be studied nightly. Your child will be doing spelling activities during the week as well. Also on some Thursday nights you will need to call out the spelling words to your child and have them write down the words, then you will grade it and your child will return it to school. This will be a practice test that will help your child prepare for the test on Friday.
Here is the High frequency word list that we will be working on learning how to read and spell! Please work with your child to help them learn all 129 words! We will be sending home 5 words along with our spelling word family words to help your child learn a few each week! :)
Each child will also need to keep reading everyday. Make sure your child reads their take home reader aloud at least three times to build fluency for meeting the requirement of 50 words per minute. Read each day. Reread the books and retell the story each evening. Include characters, settings, and loads of details from beginning to end as you go over the story again.
