Third Grade News

Mrs. Bauguess

Welcome parents and students!

We have been very busy since school started.  We have made a lot of new friends and enjoyed seeing our old ones.  We are still learning our 3rd grade rules and expectations.

In Social Studies, we are studying Citizenship.  Students are learning how they can be better citizens by being involved with their community.  We also celebrated Constitution Day and the students expressed how they felt about their country through a drawing.  We have these hanging in the third grade hallway.

In Reading, we are beginning our leveled Reading Clubs.  Each group will have a book based on their latest SRI score.  Students will read each night (Monday-Thursday) and complete a page in their Reading Notebook.  It is important that all students read their assigned pages every night, leave tracks, and complete the page in their notebook.  During class we discuss what we read the previous night and share tracks.  When students complete the notebook page it allows teachers to know which students need additional help comprehending the story.

In Math, we are continuing our review of addition and subtraction. We are also learning about fact families, odd and even, comparing and ordering numbers, and greater than and less than.  Students need to practice counting money at home and telling time.  Students should be able to recognize all coins and be able to add coins together or make change from a given amount.  Students also need to practice telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour.  This will help when we learn about elapsed time later this year.

Please  encourage your child to complete homework, read daily, and work towards their reading and math goals.  Students should also practice Spelling words every night.

This week's Spelling words focus on the short oi and short ou vowel sounds.  Our Spelling Test will be on Fridays.

In Writing, we will continue practicing cursive handwriting.  Students are expected to write in cursive everyday.  We are also reviewing how to write complete sentences and nouns.

Please remember to check your child's planner each day for important notes and homework assignments.  Planners should be signed everyday.  Students will bring home Friday Folders at the end of the week.  Please check these for your child's classwork, important notes, and  behavior charts.  These Friday Folders also need to be signed every Friday and returned on Monday.

We will continue to work on learning our classroom and school rules.  We hope to establish a student, parent, and teacher relationship to ensure that every child learns.  Parents can contact me after school at 835-5640 or by email:  bauguesk@wilkes.k12.nc.us

Thank you for all your support and we look forward to a great year!

Continue to send in Soup labels, Box Tops, empty drink pouches and aluminum cans.  These projects help support our school.

Please remember that we have a wonderful Parent Resource Center at the school.  There are many games, books, and other resources that parents can check out to help their child succeed.
