Welcome!
Mrs. Walters First Grade
Happy November!
Thanks in advance for sending the items needed for our feast on the 17th. The children will really enjoy this part of our year!
**Be sure to scroll down to the important dates section below!
Some helpful First Grade Information:
*Please initial the planner daily so you are aware of your child's behavior and any important notes sent home.
* Have your child go directly to the cafeteria if he or she is supposed to eat breakfast and they can come to class after eating.
* Be consistent on transportation home in the afternoon. Please send a note if there is a change.
*Please send any money for lunch in an envelope with your child's name and lunch number written on it.
Please send your child's library book back after you finish reading it. Be sure to write the title on the reading line in your child's planner. First Grade students are allowed to check out daily. Please read with your child nightly. We have started helping your child check out books on their level. Most of us are taking AR tests with help! :)
Homework
We will send homework each Friday. Homework is due on the next Friday. A cover sheet will be sent with the weekly assignments letting you know what is expected. Please be sure to complete each assignment and have your child write their name all assignments!
Take Home Readers are sent daily. Please be sure to have your child read these and return them as soon as they are proficient. A teacher or parent volunteer will listen to your child read and give them a new book nightly. We will be asking questions about the story, so take time to do this at home as well. The blue sheet in the folder will give good information about this process! The more your child reads, the better reader he or she will become. :)
Scholastic Book Orders
Keep in mind that we receive free books for the class if you can order some from our class book order. We will send a Scholastic order form each month so you can order as it suits you. Thanks again! :)
Recycling Opportunities
Our school is recycling aluminum drink cans. We have the opportunity to earn money for these cans! Please feel free to bring your cans to the car rider area. You will see a large red recycling bin. Drop them in. Place only the cans (no bags please). When it is full we get it weighed and receive money for our school! We appreciate your help!
**Please remember we cannot send party invitations or have any kind of balloons or party materials for birthdays according to p.67 in the RSS Code of Conduct

Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader is a school-wide program which encourages students to read and understand what they have read. After reading a book on their level, each child takes a quiz on the computer. At first, the computer will read the questions, but later the child is responsible for all reading.
STEPS FOR TAKING AN AR QUIZ:
**Be sure your child reads his/her library book at least 3 times to ensure comprehension. Ask questions about the story!
**When your child is ready, complete the small slip giving permission to test and place inside their library book. I will write the results of the quiz on the slip to keep you informed.
I will try to run reports on Fridays to let you know how close your child is to their individual goal.
