Did you know?

We did it again in 2007-2008!

Caloosa is an...

  School

for the 9th Year in a row!

FYI:

Homework should not take more than 20 minutes. If it does, let us know and we will try to give you some ideas for making it work.

Until your child starts bringing home a library book each evening Monday through Thursday, please read to him/her each evening for a few minutes. Hearing an adult use fluent reading skills, with proper expression and phrasing will enable him/her to develop an "ear" which will transfer to their own reading.

Want to help your child improve his/her Language grade?

Working on writing skills will help. Here are some ideas for you to try:

1. Give your child sentences with missing capital letters and/or ending punctuation.Have him/her find the error(s) and correct them.

2. Dictate a 4 or 5 word sentence to your child using several new and old spelling words (check the Planner for lists). Have him/her write the sentences using correct capitals, spacing between words, spelling and ending punctuation.

3. Go over the graded writing prompt in the weekly packet and discuss the teacher's comments for improvement.

4. Give your child a topic sentence. Have him/her write 2 detail sentences supporting the topic.

[Example: (topic) Dogs make great pets. (details) They like to play catch with a frisbee. Dogs can protect their owners.]

Spelling Lists will be updated by Tuesday afternoon.

          Week of: June 1, 2009

Your child may bring home one library book each evening (except Friday). You may help him/her as needed with this book. It does need to be returned each day to be used in class. However, if you didn't finish it or need to read it again, it may come home until you are finished.

  1. Need to practice phonograms with your child, but don't know them yourself?

The Spalding DVD – practicing the 70 phonograms – is now available on the county website for parents to use at home This is the link to find it:

            Go to Leeschools.net

            Click on Departments (left side)

Click on Curriculum and Staff Development

Click on Reading Skills Program – Student Practice Activities

Scroll to the bottom and click on “Spalding DVD” – Windows Media Player

Here is an interesting website www.bookadventure.com   It is a great FREE website that is run by Sylvan Learning Center where the students can look up books that are at their reading level and in their interest in which they can take quizzes.  Most of their tests match our AR book list.

When they take a quiz it grades them BUT does not tell them the right answer if they got it wrong.  They have the opportunity to retake a quiz but the questions will be different and similar questions will have answers rearranged.  The questions are NOT the same as our AR questions – I checked. J They can also earn points towards free prizes that their parents approve.

It is a great tool to build confidence when moving up a level or trying chapter books for the first time.  They can also do this AT HOME for comprehension practice!!!

Check it out and let me know what you think!
