Week of February 6, 2012

Language Arts

We are well on our way with our reading theme “Neighborhood News”. Children are discovering that members of a community are connected in a variety of ways.  They see that each person in a community plays a part in making that community special.  Our reading story for this week will be “Max Found Two Sticks” (pp. 202-221), another realistic fiction story where two sticks fall from a tree one day as Max sits on the front steps.  Since he doesn’t feel like talking, he responds to people by using the sticks to tap out the rhythms of things he sees and hears.  Our reading skill will be to recognize words with multiple meanings (pp 226-227).  Our spelling pattern will focus the use of vowel digraphs -ew & -ui-.  Students should pay attention to where the sound is heard in the word to determine which spelling pattern is use. Our grammar lessons will focus on: identifying and generating verbs in the past tense. Be sure to review Grammar Lessons PowerPoint for Neighborhood News under downloads on new.schoolnotes.com as well.  Also review action verbs and subject/verb agreement.  Vocabulary and Reading Skill tests will be on Thursday.  Spelling, Reading Comprehension, and Grammar tests will be on Friday.

Math

We are beginning chapter 4, Mental Math:  Addition and Subtraction.  Students will learn how to use models for tens and ones, mental math, and estimation to add and subtract two-digit numbers.  Also, they will learn how to add on to a number to make the nearest ten and even 100! Please see the back of this newsletter for vocabulary and concepts related to this chapter.  Please review these concepts and class work pages with your child to check his or her understanding.  *Homework will be marked across the top to let you know it needs to be returned.

We are half way through our study of Land Habitats in Chapter 3.  Students are learning about the different characteristics of land habitats.  They are also learning the type of habitat determines which plants and animals can live there. (SOL 2.5, 2.8)  Please review and discuss science pages that come home each night.

Social Studies

We are working on our unit study of geography for SOLs 2.5a & 2.6.  Students will identify different types of landforms and label U. S. geographic features for SOLs 2.4a- locating the U.S. on a map and 2.5b- locating selected rivers (James River, Mississippi River, and Rio Grande), mountain ranges (Appalachian Mountains and Rocky Mountains), and lakes (Great Lakes) in the United States.   Tests dates will be marked on the study guides.

Please let us know if you have any questions.
