February 2010

Welcome to Mrs.Doby's Kindergarten Class

Reading

We are so glad you came to our site.  The students are working hard learning to read and write using letter/sound relationships. It is so important that you help your child to practice their word projects every night.  There are 5 projects that focus on the short vowel sounds a, e, i, o and u. Most of the children are soaring through these 5 projects.  Make sure your child is reading his/her "Book in a Bag" each night.  Encourage your child to use their knowledge of letter sounds to sound out each word when reading.  We also encourage them to look at pictures to help them to read. Please have your child to retell their stories back to you after they read to build comprehension skills.  Ask them to tell you the characters in the story, the setting, how the story began and how it ended.  This month we will start our "Starfall Reading Program".  We will have guided reading groups daily to prepare the students for transition into first grade.  Most of our reading has been individualized up until this point.  In our kindergarten program we strive to teach each child on his/her ability level.  We want all the children to reach their full potential.  We are very excited to start our new reading groups this quarter.

Writing:

We will have our Rowan County Writing Assessment in March.  We continue to write sentences while using letter/sound relationships when sounding out words.  Your child's story should go along with their illustration, and include details in the setting.  Along with our hard work at school, we encourage you to allow your child to write about their experiences at home.  Remember handwriting is important.  All of the students should make their letters "the kindergarten way" by this time.

Spelling Test News:

Next week we will start having spelling test.  Please help your child to study nightly. Our spelling words are from the list of high frequency words that each kindergarten child received at the first conference.  The students will learn 5 new words every week.  Many of the students can already spell some of the high frequency words correctly.

Math:

In Math we are focusing on writing our numbers to 30.  Most of them can go all the way to 100!  WOW!  We are also graphing, learning about more and less, using ordinal numbers,  identifying our plane shapes: circle, square, rectangle, and triangle.  We continue to learn about solid shapes around us.  We love to learn through hands on experiences.
