I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.  ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

February 6-10

Parent Night is this Thursday at 7:00.  Come and learn about the 7 Habits and have fun while doing it!

Our new book for the month of February is Sounder.  The students have the guidelines for their reading project this month.  It is due on February 29th.

Please have your child go to the First in Math website and work on his or her Math skills.  All students should be finished with at least the following:  Just the Facts--addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (each student should have at least a 90% on each), Know and Show 3, Skill Sets 1-3.

I have a new policy for late work.  Please read the attachment regarding this policy.

 Specials this week are the following:  Monday--PE, Tuesday-Computer Lab, Wednesday-Music, Thursday-PE, Friday-Library

Popcorn is sold on Wednesday, and it is fifty cents.

Math-We will be working on different ways to do long division this week.

Language Arts-We should be able to complete our descriptive essay this week and will begin a new essay.  The students will be working on a narrative essay after they complete their descriptive essay.  We will also be reviewing the different parts of speech and how to use each one.

Spelling-There will be a Spelling test on Monday, February 13th on chapters 2-3 of Sounder.

Reading-The students will be working in Literary Circles daily.  During the Literary Circles they will discuss the book they are currently reading.  Each group has four students, and each student has a specific role to contribute to the group.  The roles are as follows:  Checker-the checker will record if each student in the group has completed his or her role to participate in the group.  Vocabulary Enricher-each night the Vocabulary Enricher will write down 5 words, where each word is found, and the sentence the word is in.  The group will discuss the words and read them in context.  Literary Luminary-this person will find four passages that are of interest to him or her.  They will write down why the passage is of interest and discuss each passage with the group.  Discussion Director-this person will find comprehension questions to share with and ask the group.   Each student will have a reading assignment and should complete their role at home, so he or she will be ready to discuss the reading the following day.

Science-We will review the parts of a plant and move on the Ecology chapter in the book.  We will be studying animal adaptations, food chain, and biomes.

Social Studies-Please check Mrs. Hatfield's schoolnotes website.
