Students had to define the following poetry vocabulary words in their literature books using pages 189-192.  They must read in order to get the definitions.  All definitions are there except fluency.

1. form    2.  sound  3. imagery  4. figurative language  5. tone  6. speaker

7. fluency  8. repetition  9. alliteration.

Students will write a poem about things that they are afraid of and or things they are not frighten by.  The poem must be a minimum of ten lines, give it a title, and use the elements of poetry that we discussed in class.  Please type the poem if you have access to a computer or handwrite it neatly in ink.  Remember to put a complete heading on your paper.  Due Friday, September 4, 2009.  Refer to Maya Angelou's poem "Life Doesn't Frighten Me" as a reference.

Students that were absent Friday, 8/28, must do the diagnostic prompt ASAP.

Students that were absent Tuesday, 9/1, must makeup the spelling lesson one test. Make sure to study the spelling of the words and their definitions.

These are the notes that students took during class.

Poems about what frightens/does not frighten you due tomorrow.  You must have the following:  Title, typed or written in ink on loose leaf paper, minumum of ten lines, and include the elements of poetry that we discussed in class.

Sentence Fragment – a group of words that does not express a complete thought but is punctuated as a sentence. A fragment is only part of a sentence; it is missing the subject, predicate, or both. 

To correct a sentence fragment add the missing part.

Ex: In the center ring.  

Corrected: The clowns arrived in the center ring

 

Complete Sentence – a group of words with a subject and a predicate that expresses a complete thought.

 

Noun – names a person, place, or thing.

 

Compound Noun – one noun made by joining two or more words.

 Ex.: headboard, crossbar, shot-put, dinner jacket, pen pal.

 

Common Noun – names any one of a group of people, places, or things. 

Ex: boy, girl, city, state, country, school

 

Proper Noun – names a specific person, place, or thing.

Ex: Bobby, Anna, Pembroke Pines, Florida, United States, Walter C. Young

 

Pronoun – takes the place of a noun.

Ex: he, she, it, them, they, us

 

Personal Pronouns refer to (1) the person speaking or writing, (2) the person listening or reading, or (3) the topic (person, place, or thing) being discussed or written about.

 

Demonstrative Pronoun points out a person, place, or thing.

               This, That, These, and Those are the demonstrative pronouns

 

Verb – expresses the action or condition of a person, place, or thing.

            A.  Action Verb – indicates the action of a person or thing. The action can be visible or mental.

 

            B.  Linking Verb – connects a noun or pronoun to a word that identifies or describes the noun or pronoun.

 

             C.  Helping Verb – a verb that comes before the main verb and adds to its meaning.

     Poems about things that frighten/do not frighten you were due today.

     Benchmark testing will take place , Wednesday, and Thursday  part of Friday.  Students are to bring a novel of choice to read if they finish the test early.

TUESDAY,9/8/09   In class students had to write an ABC List of words that dealt with growing up.  Prewriting activity to lead into the story "Eleven" HOMEWORK--Students are to bring a novel to read after testing tomorrow and Thursday..

WEDNESDAY, 9/8/09  Benchmark Testing - Reading. Classes not testing wrote a Bio Poem and made shirt to write it on.  HOMEWORK--Bring novel for tomorrow.

THURSDAY, 9/9/09  Benchmark Testing - Math. Classes not testing continued their Bio Poems and shirts.  Homework--None

FRIDAY, 9/10/09 Students in periods 1, 2 & 6 wrote I Am Poems and made a shirt to write it on. Periods 3 and 4 read the story "Eleven" in the literature book pages 26-33. There is no homework.  Have a Fantastic Weekend!!!!

MONDAY, 9/14/09  Reread the story "Eleven" literature book pages 26-33. Write a paragraph about a best or worst birthday or special occasion. Make sure to describe the event and explain how it made you feel.  Define the following vocabulary words in the literature book: chronological, time-line, sentence fragment, plot, except, expect, sudden, invisible, theme. Definitions due Thursday.

TUESDAY, 9/15/09   Students are to answer the following questions in their languagre arts notebooks: 1. Why do people remain silent when they are falsely accused?        2. Is it ever acceptable to embarass someone intentionally(on purpose)?   3. What is the main reason Rachel moves the sweater to the corner of her desk?  4. Why does the author compare the sweater to a big red mountain?  5. Why does Rachel say her family celebration will be too late?   Do Vocabulary and Spelling 1-4 page 32 and Grammar in Context 1-4 page 33 You must write the sentences in both.  "Eleven" test will be Friday on comprehension and vocabulary.

Wednesday, 9/16/09--What is the theme of the story "Eleven"? Vocabulary words should have been defined, will check them tomorrow. Went over parts of a friendly letter in class today. Completed grammar book page 455 exercise 31, "Fragments".

MONDAY, 9/21/09 Students are to do grammar exercises 1 and 2 page 295. Students in periods 1, 2, 3, & 6 should complete their choice activities if they did not complete them in class today.  Students in period 4 did the exercises in class and should complete one of their choice activities for homework tonight.  The other choice activity will be completed in class tomorrow.

TUESDAY, 9/22/09 - Students received interims today.  Parents, please cut off the bottom portion, sign the interim, and have your child return it to their sixth period teacher tomorrow. The student is required to sign the interim also.   Homework is grammar exercises 3, 4 & 5 pages 296 & 298. For exercise 5 use a T chart to chart the answers (Common Nouns/Proper Nouns) to keep from circling and underlining answers.

WEDNESDAY, 9/23/09--Learn cheer. Return  signed interim report to 6th period teacher.  Picnic in the Park Fund Raiser money due October 9the to 1st period teacher.  No Formal homework tonight.  Paremts please check your child's planner for notes from teachers about missing assignments.  Zeroes on pinnacle let you know that your child has not handed in an assignment.  If the assignment has been posted but there are no grades for it, I have not entered the grades or your child was absent.

THURSDAY, 9/23/09----Copy the vocabulary words from your textbook (Words to Know in brown boxes at the bottom of the pages).   Read/reread the story        Answer the following questions:                                                                           1. From the context of the story, what does the word beckon mean?  2.  One day Daedalus was watching the gulls wheeling and circling above the surf, he had an inspiration. What does the word inspiration mean in this sentence?  3. What word best describes Icarus?  4. What is the main conflict in the myth?   5. What is the author's purpose in writing this myth?   6. What lesson about human behavior does this myth teach?   7. Why did Daedalus beckon his son to stay at a certain level and follow him?  8. What caused Icarus to fall to his death?  9. What advantage did Daedalus have over his son?  10. Which sentence from the myth offers the best evidence that Daedalus was a protective father? 

Test on the myths will be next Friday, October 2, 2009.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2009 Myths are stories that ancient people made up to explain natural phenomena.  They are peoples attempt to understand the universe as they see it.  Students are to make up a myth of their own. Write a rough draft and bring it to class tomorrow.

MONDAY, October 5, 2009--Students are to write their myth, if they have not done so already, and bring it to class tomorrow.  The myth must contain at least one god/goddess and tell about a natural phenomena/teaching a lesson about life.  The test for all three myths will be Friday, October 9, along with vocabulary.  Fundraiser money is due Friday, 10/9/09

TUESDAY, October 6, 2009--Students should make all corrections and rewrite their myths tonight.  They were told in class.  Myths are due tomorrow. Myth must tell about a natural phenomena/teaching a lesson about life.  Students should have completed the chart of three stories (The Boy Who Flew, Arachne, The Story of Ceres and Proserpina)

WEDNESDAY, October 7, 2009--Myths are due today.  Story charts of The Boy Who Flew, Arachne, and The Story of Ceres and Proserpina will be checked today. Parents, when you look on Pinnacle you will find four assignments with no grades.  As long as it is empty that means that I have not put the grades in yet.  However, if you find a zero as a grade or inc. then it is time to ask your child what happened to that assignment. Test on the three myths comprehension and vocabulary will be Friday, October 9.  Study!!!!!!!!!!!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2009--Writing the introduction to an essay.  No homework.  Sixth period will take a retest of The All American Slurp tomorrow.

MONDAY, November 2, 2009--Essay. Two sheets of loose-leaf paper: First one to plan and the second one to write your essay.  Write a five paragraph essay.  This is the prompt: The cafeteria manager has asked for suggestions to increase the number of students who buy lunch at your school.  Think about what you believe would encourage more students to buy the school lunch.  Now write to convince the cafeteria manager to accept your suggestion.  You must plan then start your essay on a separate sheet of paper.  HOMEWORK--Interview someone that you know about the Civil Rights Movement/discrimination in the 1960s.  Write a summary of your interview.  If you cannot interview someone, go on the internet and find an article about discrimination or the Civil Rights Movement.  Discrimination comes in all forms, it does't matter which one you choose. Write a summary of the article: Who, what, where, when, why, and how.
