ALL CLASSES: Students will begin Lesson 6 in their vocabulary workbooks the second week in February. They continue to learn prefixes and roots and applying word attack strategies. Students should be creating a foldable, flash cards, or a card booklet with each new lesson ( their choice) . This active study tool can be used 5 - 10 minutes each day to help them master the words and word parts. Vocabulary Lessons will continue to change every 2 - 3 weeks. Students do need to continue studying all lessons as we progress through the workbook as the tests will become more cumulative.

In addition to workbook activities, students will be completing word maps and image activities of selected vocabulary from each lesson.

All students are required to read 100 minutes per week of self selected material - novels, non-fiction, magazine articles, etc. (Reading Log ). I do try to steer them away from comics, however graphic novels are acceptable. Please note that students should try to break the reading up over several days. Each day does require a parent signature. Logs are due on Thursday unless otherwise noted. Late logs can be turned in for late credit.

Reading Logs in February are due the following dates:

Feb. 4
Feb. 11
Feb. 18
Feb. 25

We will continue to work on literary elements, especially those that were challenging for the students on their Class Scapes testing. Students taught literary elements in class and we will continue to apply those to the various texts we read.

The genre of literature we will focus on is nonfiction, specifically biographies and autobiographies. We will be UNRAAVELING various biographies & autobiographies
including excerpts from journals and diaries.

How to  UNRAAVEL:

U - Underline the title
N - Now make a prediction about the text
R- Run through and number the paragraphs
A - Are you reading the questions?
A - Are the important words circled? ( write down their meaning)
V - Venture through the passage ( READ IT)
E - Eliminate wrong answer choices in the questions.
L - Let the questions be answered.

A book project should have come home on January 20th. Students have selected their narratives or biographies to read for their projects. A task requirement sheet was also distributed. (This can also be found in the attachment section at the bottom). Projects are due no later than March 2, however they can be turned in earlier. Class time to complete the project is limited, so please encourage your child to read and do work on this task over the next four weeks.

4th Block will continue to focus on cyclic patterns in literature and understanding and analyzing key literary elements.

Students have completed their literature circles on five novels. They composed persuasive paragraphs in on a choice of prompts and will be completing self and peer evaluations Friday, January 29 prior to typing their final and submitting it for evaluation. They will also complete Word Processing Activities while in the library the week of Feb. 1st.

A syllabus of second semester should have come home with 4th block ELA students. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

You can also access the document in the attachment section of my school notes page.

As always, please contact me if you have concerns, questions, or comments.
