![]() ![]() We are well into our vocabulary workbooks learning prefixes and roots and applying word attack strategies. Students should be creating a foldable, flash cards, or a card booklet with each new lesson ( their choice) . This active study tool can be used 5 - 10 minutes each day to help them master the words and word parts. Vocabulary Lessons will change every 2 - 3 weeks. Students do need to continue studying all lessons as we progress through the workbook as the tests will become more cumulative. Students will begin Lesson 3 Vocabulary the week of Nov. 2 You can find flash cards at the bottom to use for studying. In addition to workbook activities, students will be completing word maps of selected vocabulary from each lesson. We will continue to work on literary elements and writer's techniques, focusing on cause and effect and summarizing as we complete "Lob's Girl". Reporter's notes will be introduced as a strategy to summarize information from text and then applied to writing a newspaper article about. 4th Block will continue to focus on cyclic patterns in literature and understanding and analyzing key literary elements. Writing takes place daily. We will continue to work on parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc.) and creating complex and compound sentences to become stronger writers. Students will begin to use the "hamburger format" to help them plan and structure their writing. All students are required to read 100 minutes per week of self selected material - novels, non-fiction, magazine articles, etc. (Reading Log ). I do try to steer them away from comics, however graphic novels are acceptable. Please note that students should try to break the reading up over several days. Each day does require a parent signature. Logs are due on Thursday unless otherwise noted. Late logs can be turned in for late credit. Daily writing warm-ups and weekly journal entries are kept in the students' in-class folders. Selected warm-ups will be turned in each week for classwork grades. As always, please contact me if you have concerns, questions, or comments. Thanks!
