January 2012

Welcome to the new year. Things in sixth grade are flying by.
January is full - of work and breaks.

First semester/ second quarter will end January 20th.

Prior to that, we will conclude the unit on biographies/autobiographies reading Nellie Bly's biography & and excerpt from Matthew Henson's memoir.
We will then delve more into science fiction ( Ray Bradbury), informational reading ( Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, and the Yellowstone Fires), and continue to strengthen paragraph writing and vocabulary.

Students will also be begin work on individual book projects towards the end of the month. A choice square for projects will come home along with the assignment. Please be on the lookout fir that as it is a major project for 3rd quarter.

Please check your child's agenda nightly or call the homework hotline to make sure they are keeping up with their work.

My AIG class will spend January concluding the William & Mary Unit on Change, reading Ray Bradbury's "All Summer in A Day" and Shirley Jackson's "Charles". They will also focus on oral presentation skills as they conclude research on their issues, compose their papers, and present their arguments to the class.

Students are out :
January 16th - Martin Luther King Day
January 23 - Required Workday

The second report card is scheduled to be sent home on January 31st. No parent pick up is required this time, however, some of you may be contacted about coming in & signing PEP folders again.

Please keep in mind that should we have bad weather & school is cancelled, there are no make up days in the schedule other than Saturdays and Spring Break.
Specific details about snow make up days can be found on the system's web site.

As always, don't hesitate to call or email if you have questions or concerns.
