February - March2012 Students have begun work on individual book projects. A choice list for projects should have come home along with the assignment. Please check to see that your child is working on this, as it is a major project for 3rd quarter. Students must complete 2 activities on the book that they signed up for & turn that in by March 9th. We have begun work on the genre of mythology, focusing primarily on Greek and Roman myths. After learning key characteristics/traits of this style of literature, and learning key deities, students will be reading and analyzing narrative elements of several myths, including: 1) The Creation of Man 2) Pandora's Box 3) Icarus 4) Arachne 5) Ceres & Proserpina 6) The Minotaur & the Labyrinth 7) The Cyclops 8) Medusa Students will then explore a deity more in depth and be creating a "Talking Worksheet" in class the week of March 12 - 16. An assignment sheet & rubric will be given & reviewed and laptops will be in the classroom for student creations & recordings March 14 - 16. This is an in-class assignment & attendance those days will be crucial to success on this task. Reading Logs are due the Tuesday of every week, unless otherwise noted in their agendas. (There is NO READING LOG THE WEEK OF MARCH 6th). 100 minutes, read over several days, the date, title of text read, and a parent signature are required for full credit. If a student has misplaced his/her reading log, a sheet of notebook paper is fine. Please check your child's agenda nightly or call the homework hotline to make sure they are keeping up with their work. My AIG class has wrapped up its unit on CHANGE and has begun the next unit on CYCLES. New novel assignments have been given and their first entry work ( as noted on their assignment sheet) is due Friday, March 9th. Students will have seminars that day with the other students who are also reading the same novel. The second entry's work is due March 21 and the third & final entry is due March 28th, with small group seminars on each of those dates. Students will continue to explore various other pieces of literature that fit in the theme of "Cycles", including e.e. cummings poem "all ignorance togobbans into know" and "In the windowsill". Students will explore the work habits of Claude Monet and explore his cyclic process. ALL classes will go to the library on March 6th to visit the Book Fair and we'll return on March 20th for regular checkout.
