Homework Information

Students will be expected to read 20 minutes each weeknight and 45 minutes over the weekends.  This should be recored on the reading log that is in the homework folder.  Once your child has met their AR goal, they will no longer have weekend homework.  I encourage you to be actively involved in their reading, asking questions about what they have read and allowing them to “re-tell” the stories.  This goes a long way in developing the fluent reading and comprehension skills that are necessary for success on the end of grade tests.

Students will also have math homework.  It will be different each week depending on what we are studying.  Students should be studying multiplication facts each night, starting with the 0, 1, 2, and 5 tables.  Weekly fact tests will begin next week.

Spelling Homework:  Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe Contract

***Rules for spelling sentences:

- The spelling word must be underlined.

-  There must be at least 5 words in the sentence.

-  Each sentence must start with a different word.

-  Correct capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and spelling are expected!!!

Current Events:  I am currently working on a new way to do current events following very helpful feedback received during parent conferences.  Please stay tuned for that information.

Please make sure you are checking over homework BEFORE you sign your child’s agenda.  Thanks!!

Curriculum Corner

What we are learning about this week:

Reading

Incredible Stories:  We have completed the traditions unit of our reading text, and we are moving on to an awesome unit about Incredible Stories.  We will begin by reading Dogzilla.  The children will travel through integrated literacy centers and complete a differentiated contract, which allows them to choose the activities they are most interested in.

Math

Math:  Fact Families  We will begin looking at the relationship between multiplication and division through fact families.  For example:  3x4=12, 4x3=12, 12 divided by 3=4, and 12 divided by 4=3

Writing Workshop

We will begin focusing on the trait of support and elaboration.  In other words, we will working on adding rich details to our writing.   Also, we will be preparing different types of writing to present to you at the holiday breakfast!

Social Studies

I will be wrapping up the citizenship and government unit with Mrs. Noe's class this week.

Science

Plants

The children will continue learning about soil, composting, and WORMS.  Beginning next week, they will be back with me in Social Studies class learning about maps, globes, and geography!
