![]() Welcome to Mr. Kern's class. If you have comments, questions, or concerns, please write in your child's planner, send a note, or call my voice mail at 704.278.2131 ext 236. Third grade is a challenging year. It culminates with End of Grade (EOG) tests which are demanding. Student focus and attention are required throughout the year. Reading is key to student success. Your child should read AR books for 30 minutes each night. Every student should strive to attain his or her individual AR goal. Other notes: Nightly homework should be in planners.
It is hard to believe that we're half way through the school year. The good thing is that we've learned a great deal. The scary part is that we have so much more we have to teach. In AR reading I was happy to see that we have twice the number of students making their second quarter goal as compared to first quarter. Keep up the good work. The practice will pay tremendous dividends. We are wrapping up Incredible Stories in reading and will move on to Animal Habitats. Our emphasis will continue to focus on base words, prefixes and suffixes in structural analysis. Our thrust in comprehension skills will be on our strategies, but we will also work with Mr. Bell's UNRAAVEL strategy in preparation for our EOG tests. In science we will shift our focus from the soil to the stars. Our unit on the Earth, sun, and moon system is always a popular study, and it seems like we could always spend more time studying our solar system. We're going to be tracking phases of the moon and the length of days, so please help your child if he or she needs it. Keep encouraging your kids to read and make their AR goals for both points and % correct. Thank you for checking homework and for signing the daily planners. AR-goals are revised. The children are making good progress. As of right now, everyone has a positive attitude toward AR.. Disclaimer: Linked sites are not under the control of the school district or its employees.
