WELCOME to our INTENSIVE READING WEB PAGE! I can't believe that the school year is almost over. The students have taken STAR Tests as one indication of their reading growth this year. We will be doing our last FLUENCY test to determine words read correctly in 1 minute and completing our SUMMATIVE Assessments for our LANGUAGE! text. ALL of this information will be sent home in Student DATA Folders when we are finished. THE FOLLOWING INFO HAS BEEN LEFT ON THE WEBPAGE FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE & FOR NEW FAMILIES. "The MORE you READ the BETTER you GET! I've challenged each student to read a minimum of 1,000,000 WORDS--YES 1 million words by the end of May! The word count is calculated as part of our Reading Renaissance Computer Program (also referred to as Accelerated Reader..AR). If a student scores 60% or higher on the test, the number of words in the book is computed with a running total...ask your son or daughter how many words they have read so far. We are challenging Mrs. Thompson's reading students to see which classes can read the most & how many students achieve the goal. It's a WIN-WIN situation since READERS ARE WINNERS! Why did I choose 1 million words as our goal? Actually studies show that the more a child reads each day in a year the better reader they become & they score higher on standardized tests. 1 million words is equivalent (in the study) to scoring approximately in the 70 %ile (doing better than 70% of the students that take the standardized test). So, I'm hoping this will get my students reading MORE & who knows..maybe achieving higher than a million. Speaking of reading....my students participated in the SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB CLASSROOMS CARE PROJECT. By my students reading 100 books withing a period of time, Scholastic DONATED 100 BOOKS to needy children on the Pine Ridge Lakota Reservation in South Dakota. Way to go Challengers!!!
HOMEWORK: READ EVERY NIGHT. We have DEADLINES for completing a novel & taking a test on it. USE the FLASHCARDS to STUDY...on this UPDATED version of SCHOOLNOTES the flashcards are DIFFERENT. To SEE another spelling word, you CLICK on VIEW BACK. To go to the NEXT FLASHCARD CLICK on NEXT. For Skill Review Flashcards..CLICK on VIEW BACK to see the ANSWER. NOVELS for reading homework: Pages or chapters will be assigned Monday-Friday. Recommended pages/chapters will be written in the students' planners each day Monday-Friday. It is a guide as to where students should be to finish the book on time. This plan allows for students to develop a life skill of managing their time. If they are busy on a particular evening, they can read more on another day or over the weekend. They can pick their reading schedule. However, there will be a DEADLINE established for the NOVEL. This will be announced in class. Students are expected to complete the book & take an AR Test or teacher made test by the DEADLINE date. The deadline date should be written in each student's planner. Students that have difficulty completing the book or passing the test may be required to maintain a daily log for the next class novel assigned. Encourage your young adult to discuss the book with you. I hope this homework approach will develop a life skill of time management & being responsible for their work. Intensive Reading students use the LANGUAGE! program--a research based program that has proven to help students that are reading below grade level. Our goal is to be reading on or above grade level. To reach this goal, students need to be reading on a DAILY basis outside of class, be attentive, & participate during class lessons. Attendance is a key factor in this goal. A great deal of material is covered each day in our 90 minutes of class. This webpage is intended to keep students & parents informed as to what is happening in class, special assignments, and other important information. It also includes "FLASHCARDS" that students can use to practice spelling & other reading skills learned in class. I will be updating this site as needed.
