Welcome to the wonderful world of first grade. This year your child will be exposed to and involved in many different experiences and discoveries. This web site was designed to keep families connected to their children's lives at school. Children love learning. Let's work together to make it a fun - filled adventure! Class motto: "All for one and one for all!" Topics to be covered: Weather, Dinosaurs, Insects, Plants , Organisms, Spelling "College" Words, and Measurement. Author Studies: Robert Munsch, Leo Lionni ,Maurice Sendak, Barbara Park, Eric Carle, Marc Brown, James Marshall, Harriet Ziefert, and Bernard Weber.

In first grade, we learn to read by using a variety of methods. One of the strategies that we use is learning high frequency words by sight. As your child begins to recognize these words, reading will become more fluent and meaningful to him. Please remember the best way to study these words is not only to read them every night, but to also challenge your child and have them write the words too. Here is the first list of words: my, is, not, I, have, a, can, you, like, will, it, go, did, in, what, no, yes, come, and, said, and see.  The students are responsible for two hundred Dolch words by the end of the year.

Here are some fun ways to practice reading and writing these words at home.

#Look for these words in  stories you read.

#Go through magazines and look for these words in articles or advertisements (circle or underline them)

#If you go to a restaurant with your family, look and see if any of these words are on the menu.

#Make a memory or match game with these words and play the game with someone you love.

#On a warm day go outside and practice writing these words with chalk.

#Practice typing these words on your computer in different fonts.
