Physical Education is like it's never been. FITNESS is our GAME. This year you get the best of both worlds: Fitness and Game/activities everyday. I am incorporating more life skills in the P.E. curriculum to enhance exercise habits outside of school.

Please review this letter with your child. (REVISED 8/19/08)

Dear Parents, 9/14/08

We are back in school and ready to begin a new and exciting Physical Education Program. This year, your child will primarily be focused on Physical Fitness and Life Skills and Sports. We will be working mostly in stations, in which your child will set goals and strive to achieve them. In order to make this class an injury free zone, it is important for your child to have the correct attire. One requirement is to have an athletic tennis shoe that is designed for running, jumping, cross training activities. The shoe must be properly laced, in a criss-cross manner (not straight laced), and tied over the tongue of the shoe. Your child has been given examples, and we have talked about the shoe policy this week in full detail. Starting on Monday August 18, I will enforce this shoe policy. If your child is not wearing the correct shoes, or has them laced or tied incorrectly before coming into the doors of gym class, they will not be able to participate in the activities for the day and will receive an unsatisfactory grade. Please understand that your child is only with me for a maximum of 30 minutes and my lessons require every minute. If your child’s shoe is laced incorrectly, they will spend their class time correcting their shoes. Having their shoe laced and tied correctly is also a school rule, and you can find all of this information posted in the student agenda.

The Behavior Plan this year has gone into effect on their second P.E. class this week. The class will be scored by using color cards: green, yellow, and red. If expectations are met, your child’s class receives a green card which equals a CHAMPO. Yellow card: needs improvement on attitudes and behaviors, and a Red card represents students not meeting the expectations of attitudes and behaviors. P.E. will also be integrating technology into its curriculum. Each week your child will have 2 homework assignments (found on schoolnotes.com or CPM website link to Coach Gowan) which is due no later than the following Monday after their second P.E. class of the week. If your child’s class receives a Green or Yellow card, they are exempt from the assignment, but can do it for extra credit. If a class receives a Red card, homework is mandatory. Your child will receive either a satisfactory grade or unsatisfactory grade, depending on the quality of the assignment and if it is turned in on time.

Behavior will also be scored individually. If your child is a disturbance, he/she will be given a verbal warning. Second and future offenses: he/she will be sent to the Penalty box with an assignment. The Penalty box is not a punishment, but a cooling down area to redirect your child’s mind. If your child goes into the Penalty Box with no problem and works on his/her assignment, he or she may be pulled out of the box within a few minutes to join in the activity. If your child gets taken out of the Penalty Box, the behavior is ERASED and the offense doesn’t count against them. If your child exhibits poor attitude and behavior once told to go to the Penalty Box and there after, your child will stay in the box for the remaining of class time and the offense is counted. On the fourth counted offense, your child will be written up on a long form referral, which may result in further school consequences. Behavior problems after the 4th offense, will be handled by administration. Please note, that detentions may also be given before the 4th counted offense. If you ever need to contact me, please visit the school web site and email me any concerns regarding your child. Please take a moment to discuss and sign the form below and return back to me by September 1st. Thank you.
