Reading Focus:

Continue to work on Concepts of Print : title, front/back of book, where to start reading, where to go at the end of the line, punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark, quotation marks), one/two word(s), one/two letter(s), first/last letter in a word, first/last word on the page. We will also work on telling a story just from pictures. We have learned the letters Ss, Mm, Rr, Tt, Bb, Nn, Hh, Vv, Cc, Pp, Gg, Ff.  We will be working on letters Ll, Kk, Qq. Please review letters sounds, and words that start with those sounds.  These are the sight words we have learned: I, A, see, my, like, you, said, with, the, an, and, go, it, in, to.

Math Focus:

So far this year we have worked with recognizing colors and being able to recognize, draw, and build basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle); sorting by color, shape, size. We have also worked on numbers 0-10 (reading, writing, and making # sets) and are now working on numbers 6-10. We will continue working with patterns, graphing, and comparing numbers. We are starting a unit on measurement: by size, weight, height, and length. Have your students compare objects at home using these attributes.

Writing Focus:

We are now working on Small Moments: taking a story and stretching it out.  Instead of "I played basketball" we are stretching our story out to say..."I played basketball with my friends. I fell down and scraped my knee.  My friends helped me to get a bandaid." We are also working on adding more details to our writing as well as our drawing.  We want to do a great job on our unassisted writing sample.

Science/Social Studies:

We have learned about ourselves and our community as well as holidays that we celebrate. We are now starting a unit on Polar Animals in science followed by a Social Studies Unit on How Time Goes By.

Questions to ask your child about their drawing/writing:
  • Did I do my best and take my time?
  • Do my people have bodies, arms, legs, hands, and feet?
  • Did I add details to my picture? (trees, grass, flowers, house, etc.)
  • Did I use a capital letter, spaces between words, and punctuation at the end of my sentence?
  • Did I include details in my writing and picture?
  • Can others read my paper?
  • Do I have more than 1 sentence?

  • Check these sites to find our writing rubric (what we score writing samples by) as well as pacing guides so you know what your child is learning and being taught throughout the year.
