Reading Focus:

Begin working on Concepts of Print : title, front/back of book, where to start reading, where to go at the end of the line, punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark, quotation marks), one/two word(s), one/two letter(s), first/last letter in a word, first/last word on the page. We will also work on telling a story just from pictures. We have learned the letters Ss, Mm, Rr, Tt, and Bb.  We will be working on letters Hh, Vv, and Cc. Please review letters sounds, and words that start with those sounds.  These are the sight words we have learned: I, A, see, my, like, you, said.

Math Focus:

recognizing colors and being able to recognize, draw, and build basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle); sorting by color, shape, size. We have worked on numbers 0-5 (reading, writing, and making # sets) and are now working on numbers 6-10.

Writing Focus:

Writing our name and drawing pictures. We have also worked on labeling our pictures and adding more details to our pictures. We are now working on Small Moments: taking a story and stretching it out.  Instead of "I played basketball"...I played basketball with my friends. I fell down and scraped my knee.  My friends helped me to get a bandaid.

Science/Social Studies:

Learning about ourselves and our community as well as Holidays that we celebrate.

Questions to ask your child about their drawing/writing:
  • Did I do my best and take my time?
  • Do my people have bodies, arms, legs, hands, and feet?
  • Did I add details to my picture? (trees, grass, flowers, house, etc.)
(the following questions will be for later in the year when we really get into our writing program)
  • Did I use a capital letter, spaces between words, and punctuation at the end of my sentence?
  • Did I include details in my writing and picture?
  • Can others read my paper?
Sight Words:
see flashcards link at the top
These are the sight words your child will need to be able to read and spell by the end of the year.  Please work on sight words each night.  By the end of the year your child should be able to recognize and spell as many words as possible.
