Reading Focus:  Students will be meeting our Zoophonics friends in the next few weeks. They will learn their sounds. Our zoophonics friends will help us learn to read and write. Students will also begin working on Concepts About Print (front/back of the book, where to start reading, where to go at end of line, one word/two word frames, etc).

Math Focus:  We started the year by working on colors. We will then be moving on to these objectives for the first quarter: sorting objects by one attribute (color, shape, size, etc), numbers 0-5, calendar (days of the week), shapes, comparing objects using color, height, and texture.

Writing Focus: We will begin our "Writing Workshop" program this quarter.  Students will learn how to begin writing. Our zoophonics friends will help us with sounds. Students will learn how to turn and talk with a neighbor, how to tell a story through drawings, how to stretch and write words, and using words and pictures to tell a story.

Science/Social Studies: Our units that we will be covering this quarter are: Good Citizens, Families and Communities, Fire Safety, Our Country, Objects Around Us, Bats and Pumpkins.

Questions to ask your child about their drawing/writing:
  • Did I do my best and take my time?
  • Do my people have bodies, arms, legs, hands, and feet?
  • Did I add details to my picture? (trees, grass, flowers, house, etc.)
  • Did I use a capital letter, spaces between words, and punctuation at the end of my sentence?
  • Did I include details in my writing and picture?
  • Can others read my paper?
  • Do I have more than 1 sentence?
  • Check these sites to find our writing rubric (what we score writing samples by) as well as pacing guides so you know what your child is learning and being taught throughout the year.
