Welcome to Miss Ventura and Mrs. Blackwell's web page! Please check back often for updates. Be sure to check our calendar for upcoming homework and school events. Also, please make sure to dress your child appropriately for the weather, as we do go outside when the weather permits.

October 2009

It is hard to believe October is here already!  This month, we will continue to review calendar skills, shapes, and colors.  We will also be working on numbers 0 to 12 (recognizing, writing, and making sets), community helpers, leaves, pumpkins, band Halloween.  We will continue learning our letters, focusing on Hh (Honey Horse), Ll (Lizzy Lizard), and Gg (Gordo Gorilla.)  Our popcorn words are: the, a, be, and have.  Keep reviewing all popcorn words at home, and please also be working with your child on writing his or her name correctly, learning his or her birthday, and reciting the days of the week in order.  Please remind your child to make good choices at school!  We are looking forward to a great year!

How Can Parents Help at Home?

*Return all agendas (signed!), library books, Thursday folders, homework (done by the student), etc. promptly.

*Please place all money in a labeled envelope or baggie every day. The envelope or baggie should have your child's name, the amount of money, and what the money is to be used for (lunch, ice cream, field trips, book fair, etc.)

*Read, read, read! Read every day with your child. Ask specific questions about what you read. Have your child show you the parts of the book (front, back, spine, title, title page, etc.) Have your child retell the story in his or her own words and in the proper order, to check for comprehension.

*Have your child practice writing his or her first and last name correctly with a capital only at the beginning.

*Practice all letters correctly. Use flash cards for identification of capital and lower case letters, and to practice letter sounds.

*Practice popcorn words, letters, and sounds daily with your child.

*Have your child practice tying his/her shoes and buttoning/zipping pants and jackets.

*Allow for cutting practice at home.

*Ask questions and know what your child is studying in school.
