Welcome to Miss Ventura and Mrs. Blackwell's web page! Please check back often for updates. Be sure to check our calendar for upcoming homework and classroom/school events. Also, please make sure to dress your child appropriately for the weather as we do go outside most days.

April 2011
This month in language arts, we will finish learning about our zoo friends, focusing on Yancy Yak (Yy) and Jerry Jellyfish (Jj.)  In math, we will be learning about weight, capacity, and addition.  Our social studies and science themes include insects, the zoo, chickens and eggs, spring, and seasonal changes.

Please review all popcorn words daily.  Your child will be expected to read and write all 25 kindergarten popcorn words by the end of the year.  Continue to work with your child on learning his or her address and telephone number.  Please remind your child to make good choices at school every day!  We are having an excellent year!

Announcements

*Be sure your child is getting enough sleep at night!  We want our students to be well rested so that they are able to do their best in school every day.

*Practice those popcorn words every night, and read with your child for at least ten minutes per night!

*Please read and sign your child's agenda daily and check for notes. If there is a change in transportation, please write us a note in your child's agenda and call the office to make them aware of the change.

How Can Parents Help at Home?

*Return all agendas (signed!), library books, Thursday folders, homework (done by the student), etc. promptly.

*Please place all money in a labeled envelope or baggie every day. The envelope or baggie should have your child's name, the amount of money, and what the money is to be used for (lunch, ice cream, field trips, book fair, etc.)

*Read, read, read! Read every day with your child. Ask specific questions about what you read. Have your child show you the parts of the book (front, back, spine, title, title page, etc.) Have your child retell the story in his or her own words and in the proper order, to check for comprehension.

*Have your child practice writing his or her first and last name correctly with a capital only at the beginning.

*Practice all letters correctly. Use flash cards for identification of capital and lower case letters, and to practice letter sounds.

*Practice popcorn words, letters, sounds, and numbers daily with your child.

*Have your child practice tying his/her shoes and buttoning/zipping pants and jackets.

*Allow for cutting and coloring practice at home.

*Ask questions and know what your child is studying in school.
