Fifth Grade
Fifth grade AIG students began the year reading Nature's Fury, a collection of stories and articles about extreme weather events. Hurricane Ike was made to order for this topic and they eagerly looked forward every day to the latest weather updates. Is it possible that we all felt just a twinge of disappointment when it completely avoided us here in North Carolina? We are currently preparing for the experience of attending a professional performance of Much Ado About Nothing by the NC Shakespeare Festival at The High Point Theater. Later in the year we will continue our study of drama with an entire unit on Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Age. Number the Stars, an historical fiction novel set in WWII, is next on our agenda. Susan Waller, former history specialist at Horizons Unlimited, introduced it with a brainstorming session to see what we already knew about this time of the past and added many interesting bits of information.
For the first time at Isenberg, fifth grade AIG math is part of the daily schedule instead of just once a week enrichment.

Fourth Grade
Fourth grade language arts students began the year reading a collection of stories and articles all dealing with Journeys. They have moved on to the novel Snow Treasure which, like the fifth grade novel, is historical fiction set in WWII. They have enjoyed learning to use resources in the media center to gather information on the geography of Norway, where the story takes place. Instead of writing and drawing character webs, they look forward to using the computer to create them.
All fourth and fifth grade students at Isenberg will hear this week about the Elementary Battle of the Books competition and be invited to begin reading the books on the 2008-2009 list. We need students who love to read to try out for the Isenberg team!
