This week in science we are exploring matter, properties of matter; properties of solids, liquids, and gases, as well as exploring mass and its properties.

In math we will learn about fractions and how to identify and label fractions.

Monday - February 6 : science chapter 8 lesson 3 checkpoint; math - P 7 - 9 AM; PS 7-9 PM

Tuesday - February 7: science chapter 8 lesson 4 checkpoint; math - wkbk p. 272AM;P 9-1 PM

Monday: No assignment - teacher absent. Continue to work on stem projects.

Tuesday: January 31 - Math P 7-5; Science Study for chapter 7 science test. (Use study guide.) Continue to work on Stem project. Boards are due Thursday.

Thursday: February 2: math PS 7-7 ws; science - Chapter 8 lesson 1 checkpoint. Submit stem fair projects if it was not submitted today.

Friday: science - cha pter 8 lesson 2 checkpoint; math - E 7-5 ws ( congruent - having the same size and same shape)

Reminder: February 13 is a half day for students.

Thank You! Parents I wish to thank all of you for the tremendous amount of guidance and support you have given your children as they worked so hard on their STEM projects. I am proud to be the teacher of children who consistently do such great work. Their efforts are evident in the products they have submitted. I solute you all!

Have a great weekend!

Week of January 24:

Math - For the next couple weeks we will identify and describe various geometric shapes, their similarities, and differences, and how and where they are located in our everyday lives. (Refer to chapter 7 of the online textbook). Tues - HW: P 7-1 AM; E 7-1 (PM)

Science - By the end of this chapter students will be able to know that fossils provide evidence about the plants and animals that lived long ago; describe how fossils are formed.

Hw: Tues - chapter 7 lesson 2 checkpoint worksheet

Wednesday: Math - P 7-2 AM; PS 8-1 PM. Science Ch 7 Less 4 checkpoint (PM)

Thursday: P 7-3 AM Math; PS 8-3 PM. Science - Ch 7 less 4 checkpoint (AM)

Friday: Math PS 7-4 ws; PS 8-3 PM; Science - How long are dinosaur teeth? ws Chapter 7 science test will be given Wednesday, February 1, 2012. stem - Presentation boards and final projects are due February 2.

Year Book Orders and Money are due February 1, 2012. $35

Wednesday, January 18: Math - P 3-10; Health - Write and draw healthy and unhealthy breakfast foods. Label each.

Science - STEM - ORDER FORMS were given to students today for the science fair boards. Boards cost $5 each. The completed project is due February 2, 2012.

MATH TEST : Friday, January 20.

Tuesday, January 17, 2012:Math - P 6-9 both groups. Science - (PM only) Write a paragraph to describe somethingnew you learned from Chapter 6. How can you use this information in the future?

MATH - chapter 6 test will be Friday, January 20. Test will cover addition and subtraction of two- digit and three-digit numbers. This includes estimating to subtract, as well as regrouping. Today and tomorrow we are working on subtracting across zero. (Lesson 3-10 of the third grade book). Check online to view the book.

STEM - data, results, conclusion, and short report are due this Friday, January 20, 2012.

Announcements:

STEM Family Night Out!! Thurman Jones of Patriots Technology and Councilman Mel Franklin will also be present. Homework passes will be given to students who attend. (Passes cannot be used toward the STEM project.) Time- 7:00 - 9:00 in the Eugene Burroughs Campus Cafeteria. Parents must attend with their child.

Science Chapter 6 Review

Need to know:

  • The four types of wet weather (precipitation)
  1. Rain
  2. Snow
  3. Sleet – freezing rain
  4. Hail – pieces of ice that fall from clouds
  • What is weather? What the air outside is like.
  • What is temperature? Tells you how hot or cold the air is.
  • Water cycle – the way water moves from the clouds to Earth and back to the clouds again.
  • Condense – change into tiny drops of water
  • Evaporate – when water changes to vapor
  • Migrate – to move to a warmer place
  • Hibernate – to have a long, deep sleep
  • Why is hibernation important for some animals? (They hibernate because food is scarce.)
  • Be prepared to discuss reasons why food is scarce in the winter.
  • What are the four seasons?
  • Give characteristics of one season.
  • Know ways to stay safe in bad weather.

January 11, 2012

Students should study for their science tests and ontinue to work on STEM project.

Homework for Monda,y January 9, 2012:-

Science - Ch 6 Lesson 6 checkpoint. Test will be Thursday: Need to know the four seasons and be able to describe the weather that occurs during each season, know why it is important for some animals to hibernate, be able to compare seasons, know how to stay safe in bad weather, know the meaning of hibernate, evaporate, condensation, and be able to explain the water cycle.

Happy New Year! Welcome back everyone!.

The start of the new year means we are nearly half-way through the school year. That said, I encourage everyone to encpourage your child to take advantage of any and all extra credit opportunitities available.

The first opportunity given was the math winter packet. Many have submitted their assignments today. If your child did not complete the assignment over the break, there is still time. I will accept the work up until Thursday, January 5, of this week.

I will provide additional acitivities throughout the year. However, please keep in mind, since this is an extra credit opportunity, late submissions will not be accepted. The second quarter ends Jan 20, so please do not let the opportunitities pass you by.

STEM: variables, materials and procedures are due Friday, January 6.

This week in math we will subtract, one - digit numbers from a two-digit number, two- digit numbers from a two- digit number, and two digit numbers from a three - digit number. In science, we are investigating Earth's weather and seasons (Chapter 6). We will conclude this chapter either Monday or Tuesday of next week, followed by the Chapter 6 test.

Students should routinely practice their math skills via StudyIsland.com, and FirstinMath.com (AM class will receive their passwords tomorrow - Wed, Jan 4).

Assignments:

Tues: Sci: Ch. 6 Less 2 Summary/Checkpoint. Today the students observed condensation, evaporation and discussed the water cycle.- Math: AM - pp211 - 212. PM -P 6-1 ws.

Wed: Sci: Ch 6 Less 3 Summary/Checkpoint. Math - PM 3-7; AM pp213 - 214

Thur: Sci: Ch 6, Less 4 Summary/Checkpoint. Math - E 6-3 ws (All)

Fri: Sci: STEM - variables, material, and procedures due. Ch 6, Less 5 Summary/Checkpoint. Math: AM p 217 -218; PM E 6-4.

**Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.

Enjoy your week!!Cool
