4th, 6th, and 7th Blocks are learning the real number system. Once this is learned we will work on problem solving. This is Goal 1 of the 8th grade math standards.

5th Block (Algebra 1) has learned the real number system and now are reviewing solving two step equations. We will then begin to solve equations with variables on both sides of the equation. This is in Chapter 3 of their Algebra book. (Goal 1- Objective 1.02)

Tutoring: I am at school each morning by 7:30 AM. If your child needs extra help they are welcome to come to my room at that time.  There are some days that I can stay after school. We will need to set up a day and time for the afternoon.

Please encourage your child to work on Study Island (www.studyisland.com). This is an excellent program that can be accessed from any computer with Internet. Your child should know their log in and password from last year.

Website Recommendations for Parents and Students
You will find these under Favorite Links
A website that I recommend for parents and students is titled Hoagies Gifted Education Page. This site is devoted to educators, parents, and the gifted child. This website seems to have just about everything you would want to know or need to know about having a gifted child. It discusses identification and testing of gifted children. It gives you gift ideas along with books, journals, magazines and products for you and your child.

Algebra 1 students will take the Algebra 1 EOC at the end of the year. This test is completely calculator active. The AG-Math and Math 8 students will take the 8th grade EOG only. Below are the goals that the students are expected to master, along with the percent of questions that may be asked for each goal.

Standard Course of Study for Algebra 1

Goal 1: The learner will perform operations with numbers and
expressions to solve problems. (20-25% of EOC)
Goal 2: The learner will describe geometric figures in the coordinate
plane algebraically. (10-15% of EOC)
Goal 3: The learner will collect, organize, and interpret data with
matrices and linear models to solve problems. (30-35% of EOC)
Goal 4: The learner will use relations and functions to solve
problems. (35-40% of EOC)

Standard Course of Study for 8th Grade Math
Goal 1: The learner will understand and compute with real numbers. (15% of EOG)
Goal: 2 The learner will understand and use measurement concepts. (15% of EOG)
Goal 3: The learner will understand and use properties and relationships in geometry. (15% of EOG)
Goal 4: The learner will understand and use graphs and data analysis. (25% of EOG)
Goal 5: The learner will understand and use linear relations and functions. (40 % of EOG)

Major Concept/Skills For 8th Grade Math
Real numbers
Linear functions
Pythagorean theorem
Indirect measurement
Scatterplots
Slope
Equations and inequalities

Parents please check your child's planner often. I try to inform you if your child did not turn in an assignment. I do require your child to show all steps on their assignments. This way I can see what they are doing right or wrong and I can help them to see their mistakes. The phone number for our homework hotline is 704-633-9561 Ext. 8100. If you need to talk with me my number is 704-633-4775 Ext. 216 and my planning is from 8:30- 10:00. My e-mail address is holmestm@rss.k12.nc.us. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I am here to help your child in any way that I can.
