September 30, 2010 Today we visited the website Build Your Wild Self and had fun creating an avatar with all the available animal parts. This is based on the Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, a favorite of young and old alike. Creating an avatar to represent us online is just one way we learn to keep our personal information private. After creating their avatars, students used the Print Screen key to take a snapshot or "screen shot" of their wild selves. These were pasted into a PPT slide. I will then convert these to jpeg images for insertion next week on their blog pages. They can go back to the site and click on the zoo links at the bottom to learn more about many different wild animals.
September 23, 2010 Today we navigated to the class blog and learned how to sign into it (see the link to the class blog above) and composed a one sentence post about something learned so far this year in third grade. The posts will not be published until I have approved them. The focus was not perfect spelling but only generating one thought in order to practice using the tools to publish on the blog. We will not blog regularly in third grade but will use from time to time not only for writing but also for collaboration with other classes and as a means to showcase our work. This week parents should receive the form providing rationale and policy information for student blogging. Please sign and return as soon as possible. As always, feel free to email me with any questions you may have.
September 16, 2010 Students made their own desktop shortcuts to this technology page and to the network keyboarding program, Type to Learn. They learned about the home row and correct finger positions and worked through the first lesson of the program. Parents, keyboarding is a very important skill; however, due to the fact that our technology classes meet only once per week, I strongly encourage you to provide opportunities at home to reinforce keyboarding. The links at the bottom of this page provide 2 of many online typing programs that can be used at home.
September 9, 2010 Students logged on to workstations for the first time this year. We discussed the term "browser" and found the three browsers installed on our workstations. We used Google Chrome to navigate to the schoolnotes page. We will learn to make desktop shortcuts for web pages we will frequently use. Google Chrome has a visual interface which is helpful for younger students as they are able to see the image of recently visited pages rather than a long URL.
Please the form that will be coming home during the week of Sept. 13-17 regarding Internet use at school. There will also be a separate page regarding the blogging policy. Mrs. Olson will have an individual letter to distribute to each family with PowerSchool log on information. This will be given at her back-to-school information night.
September 2, 2010 Student came to the lab and saw some videos previewing the exciting things that can be done with a SmartBoard, which will be eventually installed in each classroom this year. The also had a quick overview of the schoolnotes and the class blog page.
