Biology 1 - Period 0

Overview: The amount of knowledge in the area of biology is expected to double in less than four years! Realizing this we can not expect to cover everything there is to know in biology. This course will focus on the main principles in biology as outlined in the Virginia Standard Objectives of Learning for biology. (See Attached). Subjects covered will prepare students for the SOL biology test. Passing of SOL tests is required for graduation. You may find that you need to pass the biology SOL test specifically to graduate from High School. This course will attempt to strike a balance between covering a large amount of content and discipline specific vocabulary and real understanding of key concepts. Critical thinking and communication, both written and oral will be emphasized. Students will be engaged in many minds on and hands-on activities throughout the year.

Grading:
Grades will be based on a variety of assessment measures including homeworks, tests, quizzes, reflective writing or writing-to-learn activities, labs, and projects. Grades will be based on a point system where each assignment is given a point value. A percent score will be determined at the end of each Six Week grading period by adding up the total number of points the student has earned and dividing by the total points possible. In this manner students can keep track of their own grades by keeping a running tally of points they have earned versus points possible. In general tests and quizzes add up to about 50 to 60 percent of your final grade.
Estimate point value of assignments:
Quizzes 20 to 40 points
Tests 100 points
Homeworks 5 to 20 points
Labs 20 to 30 points
Projects 50 to 100 points
Notebook 25 to 50 points

NOTE: Reading, writing, finding answers to questions, and writing in complete sentences is NOT "busy work". It is practice! (Just like in sports.) If you dont use a muscle it will atrophy or weaken, if you don't use your brain....well. Written and oral communications skills are probably the MOST important skills you will take from high school. Research has shown that emphasis on these skills, (ex. Comparing and contrasting, describing, analyzing, etc.) leads to better test scores and overall academic success in all subjects. We will practice "writing across the curriculum" in this class.

Homework:
You can expect homework in biology on almost a daily basis. If not actually a written assignment, you will often be asked to read a section in your book or review class notes. Biology is a lot like learning a new language, you need to practice every day. I expect EVERY homework will be done. I will check homeworks for completion and effort. Be sure to answer or attempt each and every question on your homework. . Remember you need to do ALL homeworks, they are a prescription for your success.

Notebooks:
You will be expected to keep a notebook in biology. A folder with a pocket in it is required. All papers, notes, quizzes and handouts should be kept in this notebook in order by date.

Mid 6 week grade reports and final 6 week grade reports:
Every three weeks throughout the year progress reports will be issued to students. Progress reports listing all your assignments and grades will be distributed in the middle of each 6 weeks and at the end of each 6 week grade period. Dates these reports are sent home will be announced on http:
.new.schoolnotes.com!

Absences:
Please note the school policy on absences. You have one day to make up work for each day that you have been absent. Remember if you have been absent it is YOUR responsibility to see that work is made up on time. While I will do my best to remind you of your responsibilities, I can not keep up with the many students that I have had absent in recent years. (For Example: In only one six week grading period I once recorded 256 student absences!). Be sure to check http://new
.schoonotes.com if you have been absent and note what you missed and what you will need from me. You can also call someone in your class if you are absent, find out what you missed, borrow notes from another student, and/or check with me. If you can not meet the time requirements for making up work, please see me BEFORE time expires and we will work out a mutually satisfactory schedule.

Tardies:
According to school policy you will receive a Penalty Hall upon receipt of your 1st tardy and one Penalty Hall for each subsequent tardy. I expect you to be seated at your desk when the bell rings. If you are not in class when I check homework or give a quiz because of an unexcused tardy you will receive a zero for that assignment. If you do not bring materials to class and you are asked to go get them you will also receive a tardy.

Food and Drink:
No food or drink except water  is permitted in school outside the cafeteria. If you enter my room with food or drink and I see it you will receive automatic penalty hall. NO QUESTIONS, NO DISCUSSION. If you have food or drink in your possession be sure it is not visible or is secured in your book bag. This rule is especially important for health and safety in a biology laboratory.
