CENTRAL AVENUE READING
Dear Parents and Friends,
We are coming to the close of another positive, engaging school year. Soon you will be enjoying the lazy days of summer that seem to go on and on. As a parent, you are probably thinking about how you can keep your children happy, healthy, and busy throughout the long summer. Here are some fun summertime ideas to also keep them learning and READING.
1. Instill a love for books in your child. Read together everyday. Use the Summer Reading List (coming home the week of June 9th) to choose books that are on your child's independent reading level.
2. Visit the town library where you can both choose books that are interesting and engaging to read aloud.
3. Work on language skills. Encourage clear speech and speaking in full sentences. Build vocabulary by discussing new words and how they are used. Have fun with words by playing games with them such as finding a synonym(words that mean the same), an antonym( words that are opposite) or a homophone (words that sound the same but have different meanings).
4. Encourage fluent reading(This is smooth, expressive reading). Reading fluently helps your child concentrate on meaning instead of sounding out every word. Here are some tips to help yur child improve over time: (1) Choose books that are at your child's independent reading level.(2)Model fluent reading while reading aloud to your child. Model by using expression in your voice and by reading at a moderate rate. (3)Ask your child to read a story, a paragraph, or a sentence, repeatedly, to help build sight word recognition and confidence. (4) The best way to improve as a reader is to read for pleasure each day, all summer long!
I wish all Central Ave. families an exciting and wonderful summer.
Happy Reading!!!!
