Welcome to Ms. Stamper's 6th Grade Social Studies

It's hard to believe we are almost in the middle of the 2nd Quarter already. Time really does pass fast when your having fun. Most of us ar having a wonderful time learning in Social Studies and are having so much fun. I am learning as much as the children are and we are enjoying bonding as a class.

    In Social studies this quarter we will focus on our Country projects which have been assigned and are due on Jan.6, 2009. This project will count as 2 grades. I have put the project here for you in case your child has lost his/her paper for you to copy:

SOCIAL STUDIES  PROJECT

    You will be assigned a country to collect facts from. These facts will be used to create various graphs, maps and displays. You will use the World Almanac, Atlas, Encyclopedias and other library resources to gather the information for your project. All of your information must be displayed somehow on a science backboard or poster board.
    YOUR PROJECTS WILL BE DUE FRIDAY JAN. 9, 2009. THIS WILL COUNT AS TWO (2)  PROJECT GRADES.  I WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE PROJECTS. WE WILL USE SOME CLASS TIME TO THE THE RESEARCH IN THE MEDIA CENTER.  IF YOU WASTE THE TIME I AM GIVING YOU TO DO THE WORK YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE MEDIA CENTER.

    USE THE WORLD ALMANAC TO FIND THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION;

Economic Activity: (5 points Display on backboard)

What are the major industries found in your         country?

What does your country Import?

What does your country Export?

Religion: (5 points Make a graph)

What are the Major religions? (give percentages of each)

Miscellaneous Facts : (10 points Display on Backboard)

    Languages
    Area
    Currency
    Rate of Exchange
    Life Expectancy Males
    Life Expectancy Females
    Literacy Rates
    Temperatures  Summer highs and lows

USE AN ENCYCLOPEDIA TO RESEARCH THE FOLLOWING TOPICS RELATED TO YOUR COUNTRY:

HISTORY:
    Create a TIMELINE of important events in the     history of your country you
    you must have at least ten (10) dates. (5             points)
    Choose one of the events from your Timeline     and write a paragraph detailing the event. (5     points)

NATIONAL FLAG: (10 Points)
    Create a drawing of your country's flag. You     may use various materials to create your flag     (draw and color, paint, construction paper,         fabric etc.) Flags MAY NOT BE DOWNLOADED      from the internet or store bought!

PAPER DOLLS: (5 Points)
    You will be given a pattern that you will need     to dress like someone would dress from your     country. The clothing needs to be tradiotnal         dress not modern. You may use cloth or             construction paper or any other materials         that would be suitable. Be creative and dress     your doll to look like they just stepped out of     your country. YOU WILL ONLY BE GIVEN ONE     PATTERN don’t lose it.

USE ANY OTHER RESOURCES IN THE MEDIA CENTER TO RESEARCH THE FOLLOWING TOPICS RELATED TO YOUR COUNTRY;

PINWHEEL:(10 points)
    Choose ten (10) topics you would like to             research. Name and decorate your                     pinwheel which I will give you. Write the             topic beside each number. Write the answer     in the pie slice. You can choose from the             following: government, ethnic groups, size of     country, bodies of water, capital,  important     cities, languages, exports, imports,                     attractions, describe the region the country is     in, land forms, natural resources, industries,     climate, religions, famous person, crops,             events in history.  If there is something else     of interest you want you to use you may do         so. YOU WILL ONLY GET ONE DON’T LOSE IT.
   

TOURIST ATTRACTION: (5 points)
    Find a popular tourist attraction in your             country. Create a drawing showing what it is     and what people do there. This drawing is to     be done on a postcard I give you. It must be     drawn and colored. The information about the     place must also be written on the postcard         given to you. YOU WILL ONLY GET ONE DON’T     LOSE IT.

RECIPE: (5 points)
    Find a recipe served in your country. COPY IT

HOLIDAY: (5 points)
    Write a paragraph about one holiday or             celebration held in your country which is NOT     celebrated in the USA or is celebrated                 differently. Include dates, purpose, and a         description of the activities associated with it.

BIOGRAPHY: (10 points)
    Find an important person from your country     and write a page report about them. Tell me     birth/death. why they are important, and         then in a paragraph give me YOUR OPINION     of them positive or negative.

USE AN ATLAS TO CREATE AND COLOR A MAP OF YOUR COUNTRY WHICH INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING; (20 POINTS)
    Title, Key, Compass Rose
    Capital and five (5) Cities
    Also include one of the following; River, Body     of water, Or a land form
    YOU MAY NOT USE A MAP DOWNLOADED             FROM THE INTERNET
   
ALL YOUR INFORMATION MUST BE ON A BACKBOARD OR POSTER BOARD. BE CREATIVE. DON’T LOSE THIS PAPER I WILL NOT GIVE YOU ANOTHER ONE. IF YOU LOSE THIS IT WILL B YOUR RESPONSIBILTY TO COPY IT FROM SOMEONE ELSE OR COPY IT FROM HERE. HAVE FUN AND ENJOY!!!!!

Week 1; A journey Through Europe and Russia. Passports. 5 themes of Geography. Wrriting, Mapping,  key terms.

Week 2: Europe's Land and People. Globe Activity, Mapping, 5 themes Booklet, Key terms, Writing.

Week 3: Europes Foundations. Myths, Actors Masks art Activity, Key terms.

Week 4: Europe After The Fall of Rome, Middle Ages, Shields art activity, Manor Drawing, Medieval Video.

Week 5: Whipping Boy Novel, Video Medieval, Complete manor drawings.

Week 6: Whipping Boy Novel completion, Key terns, Medieval Video.

Week 7: Modern Europe Takes Shape. Key terms, Absolute Monachary Project.

Week 8: World War 1. theme Movement, Key terms, Wrtiting, Video WWI.

Week 9: Europe Rebounds. Key terms, Wrting.

NOTE:We will do DOL (Daily Oral Language) as well as some type of writing atleast 2-3 times a week. This syllabus will give you a brief descriptionas to what we are doing each week. It may change as needed.

*PROGRESS REPORTS WILL BE SENT HOME DEC. 3RD.

*All students are expected to follow the uniform policy. Red polo shirts. Khaki twill pants. Belts must be brown or black and in the beltloops. Socks should be white. NO "SAGGIN' AND DRAGGIN'," we want you tolook like the wonderful young ladies and gentlemen we know you are.

*NO electronic equipment allowed in the classroom. If your child bringsit to class and I see it I will take it from them. The item will beturned into the office and you will have to come pick it up. Simplerule to remember is "If you don't want me to take it. Don't Bring it"

* Any bookbag or PE bag MUST BE MESH OR CLEAR

*Please be aware gum is not allowed on the school grounds and in theclassroom for several reasons. Students will be told and warned and ifthe same student(s) continue to not follow the NO GUM ALLOWED policy,we are given no choice but to send an office referral. Remind yourchild NO GUM PLEASE.

*Please call the homework hotline daily to find out the homework for theteam. I do the hotline for our team so you can call the one number andget the homework for the Creator's Team . I have the homework on by3:30 and the number is 704-633-2922 ext. 612. You can also leave anymessages at this number for any teacher on the team.
