Welcome to Mrs. Stewart's Math Page

Your child continues to learn about equations.  We have added negative integers to the equations.  The majority of 2nd quarter we will be working on equations, negative integers, solving algebraic expressions and word problems.

Many careless errors can be made in this area if steps are not followed very carefully.  Please remind your child to use the notes he/she took in class with the steps and examples. It is extremely important that your child review his/her integer rules on a daily basis.  He/she should have them memorized.  Ask to see them, then ask questions about them.  For example, what is a neg. divided by a negative.

Integer rules:
Neg. x neg.  = positive
Pos. x pos. = positive
*If the signs are the SAME, the answer is POSITIVE.*
Neg. x pos. = Neg.
Pos. x neg. = Neg.
*If the signs are DIFFERENT, the answer is Negative.*
Division rules are exactly the same.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to email me.

Please be reminded that your child's grades are based on the following percentages: Classwork = 65%, Homework = 10%, Warm-ups = 15%, Tests/Projects = 25%

Info about homework:  Homework is considered the assignments that the student will be completing in the "blue folder" given to him/her at the beginning of the year.  These assignments will always be review and the student should be familiar with these topics.  Homework should average approximately 20 minutes per day. It is extremely important that homework be completed regularly!!!!.

Classwork: Classwork is considered the assignments that are given during class and is based on new information/topics.  These assignments, on occasion, may need to be completed at home.

Corrections on assignments: It is important that you know that corrections can be made on any and all homework assigments, as well as classwork assignments if the grade received is less than a 100.

I understand that sometimes math is not understood the first time and I believe it is important for students to be able to do the math, not that the student be able to do the math the first time.  Corrections allow the student to fix mistkes after the assignment has been reviewed and the opportunity for questions to be asked has been given.

If students have not done well on an assignment it is highly recommended that students make all corrections necessary to receive a better grade.  This will not only improve grades, but students will understand concepts better, as well.

****Projects will be completed during class periods.  If an absence occurs when projects are completed, it will have to be completed at home within the same time frame as any other assignment.****

Parents:

*Please check to see that your child has completed his/her homework each evening.  It is very easy to get behind and takes lots more work to get caught up.

*Please ask your child about the topics covered in class each day.

*Please encourage your child to review multiplication and division on a daily basis.  I know this sounds odd, but careless errors in this area are what seems to 'get' most students.  It will also help to have students review his/her notes daily, as well.

Info on notes: Students in math class are REQUIRED to take notes regularly.  This is not an option.  These notes are designed so that students have examples and information to use when doing assignments at home.  If students are not bringing notes home to use, they should.  Also, please check how notes are taken.  They are given in a step-by-step format for students to follow when completing similar problems.  Notes are also to be used as a tool in class.  This helps students be able to find information, decipher information, and to recreate situations in their minds to better help them solve mathematical questions.  Beginning September 29, grades will be given for notes.  these should be in order and kept in a 3 ring binder on loose leaf paper.  NO spiral notebooks will be graded.  This is because I often hand out additional pages to be used as part of notes.

Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
