Curriculum Focus

It is January 11th, and we are almost through the 2nd quarter of the school year.  For the remainder of this quarter and the first half of the 3rd quarter, we will focus on collecting, analyzing, and graphing data along with measuring area, perimeter, area, and length with a variety of tools, and problem solving using equations.

A cross reference between textbook chapters, the district pacing guide, and the NC Standard Course of Study objectives was sent home Monday, November 30th, along with each student's Classscape Benchmark test results. Please ask your child for this if you do not see it.  This is important for any tutors who may be serving your child for understanding areas of strength and weakness in math.  I hope you will find this helpful.

Encore Class

My Encore class will read a Gary Paulsen novel and study it.  We are also meeting our math challenges with more study in our weakest areas: problem solving using operations with fractions, decimals, percents, and variables, and measurement. We are studying the Larry Bell's Twelve Powerful Words with the Fab 5 steps. Students will be able to read, pronounce, spell, make a sentence, and a question with each of the words.

Math Homework:
Copy the assignment from the board into your agenda. (the homework hotline is 633-2922 x601)
Do as much of the work as you can, showing everything that you did.
Have questions ready when you enter class.

For support, use the textbook site:  http://go.hrw.com with the lesson keyword.

My students are given a variety of opportunities to support their learning of mathematics.  These include working with materials, or making them, to learn a concept through direct, hands-on tasks.  Lectures and notes are given with guided practice to develop skills.  Student feedback on goals and essential questions occurs daily.  This is sometimes collected in their paperwork or observed.   Homework is an opportunity for practice and critical thinking about topics covered in class, or to review skills from previous years. Parents and guardians are asked to monitor student weaknesses and intervene to support them in even more practice than the assigned homework.

The elements critical to a student's success in my class are:
Attend class on time and promptly prepare to work
Have an agenda, homework, math binder, paper, and pencils every day
Behave respectfully, work, and cooperate

THINK about what is presented: be able to answer the essential questions
Use classtime wisely to meet math goals: do ALL classwork and homework on time
Ask for help and answer questions
Work considerately with others when in partners, teams, or whole group
At night, summarize the lesson and identify your learning needs for tomorrow

Grades are computed as follows:
10% Homework
25% Tests
65% Classwork and participation
