Third Quarter of First Grade! Teacher: Mrs. Lisa Dixon Teacher Assistant: Mrs. Crystal Smith Millbridge's Theme for 2011-2012: "Dig In and Read!" Class Information - Every Friday, we send home Class Notes for the week. Information includes what we learned that week, what's coming the next week, general information, classroom needs, and upcoming events. Please be sure to check your child's Take Home Folder on Friday to get this important information. Homework - Weekly spelling and math homework assignments are sent home each Friday and are due the following Friday. Challenge spelling words have been added as an option. Also, alphabetical order has been added as a new homework assignment. Students have reading homework EVERY night, which should be logged in on reading logs located in their Take Home Reading folder. Third Quarter Curriculum Third quarter curriculum is very demanding. Students must follow classroom procedures, pay attention, and stay on task in order to meet academic expectations. School attendance is very important. We are practicing learned skills and learning new concepts everyday! Phonics - Long vowel sounds with silent e; contractions; compound words; soft c and g; final blends -nd, -ng, -nk, -ft, -lk, -nt; vowel pairs ai, ay, ea, ee, oa, oo, ow, ue; and base words with endings -s, -ed, -ing. Reading - Reading and spelling high frequency words 51 through 75 (will, up, other, about, out, many, then, them these, so, some, her, would, make, like, him, into, time, has, look, two, more, write, go, see). Developing reading comprehension skills, such as monitoring/ clarifying, summarizing, noting details, making predictions, problem solving, sequence of events, fantasy vs. realism, and categorizing/classifying. Please work on retelling at home after your child has read with you. Ask him/her to close the book and tell you the characters and the setting. Then tell what happened first, next, and next until the ending. Remind him/her to include as many details as possible! Accelerated Reading - You child's third quarter reading level and point goal have been sent home, as well as STAR Reading Test results. The STAR Reading Test determines your child's reading level and helps students select appropriate books from our library. In order to meet their goals, students must have their required number of points and at least an 80% comprehension (accuracy) rate. Please read library books nightly with your child. Use the discussion questions listed on the AR Reading Log found inside the Take Home Reading folder to review the book with your child. New for Third Quarter: Parent signature will not be required prior to students taking an AR test. AR reports will be sent home on Fridays.
3rd Quarter AR 50% Cut-Off Date: February 22, 2012 3rd Quarter AR 100% and 150% Cut-Off Date: March 23, 2012 Writing - We will concentrate on writing stories with complete sentences (noun and verb) that consistently use proper capitalization and punctuation. We will also learn to add describing words, write combine/extended sentences, and write for a sense of audience. Math - Comparing and ordering numbers to 75. Knowing numbers and number words to 75. Estimating quantities to 75. Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Developing FLUENCY with single-digit addition and subtraction. Solving word problems that require addition, subtraction, and fair shares. Measuring length, capacity, and mass with nonstandard units. Identifying, naming, and building geometric figures. Collecting, organizing, and describing data using line plots and tallies. Describing events as certain, impossible, more likely, and less likely. Sorting and classifying objects by two attributes. Using Venn diagrams to show similarities and differences in two sets. Repeating and extending patterns and identifying pattern units. Social Studies - Understanding balance, motion, and weighing of objects. Applying basic economic concepts to home, school, and community. Understanding solid earth materials (rocks). Communication The best way to communicate with me is to write a note in your child's planner. We check planners every morning for important information.
