First Quarter Curriculum

We will be reviewing previously learned skills and learning many new skills this quarter.  Students must follow classroom procedures, pay attention, and stay on task in order to meet academic expectations.

Reading - Reading and spelling high frequency words 1 through 25.  Reviewing letter formation and sounds, including long and short vowel sounds.  Recognizing characters, settings, sequence of events, and problems in stories.

Writing - In first grade, we focus on writing small moment stories with at least five sentences.  Sentences should have correct capitalization and puncutation, as well as neat handwriting.  High frequency words should be spelled correctly.  First graders also using drawings to help tell their stories.  Drawings should match their stories and contain details.

Math - Knowing numbers and number words to 25.  Understanding place value (ones and tens), estimating quantities to 25.  Counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.  Developing fluency with single-digit addition.  Solving word problems.

Social Studies - Good Citizenship, Rules and Laws,  Community Leaders, All About Me
