Welcome to Millbridge and to second grade!!!

Mrs. King Second Grade

Please use this page to learn about our classroom and what we will be doing in each subject area.
Mrs. Leazer and I are very excited you will be sharing your child with us this year.

Reading - We are well into our second unit of reading, "Nature Walk." We enjoyed going on a nature walk and observing signs of fall last week. Everyone collected an object to write about in "Writer's Workshop." During this unit some of the skills we will cover include compound words, fact and opinion, and categorizing and classifying.

AR Reading - Reading is the single most important thing you can do to help your child at home. Please read at least 20  minutes each night and record the time spent reading on the reading log. Make sure your child reads their AR book at least two times and ask your child comprehension questions about the book before they try to test on the book.

Math - We are using a new math series this year.  The papers your child brings home may look different to you. We will be using a lot of math manipulatives and games for math instruction. This summer I attended a math conference in Raleigh and got lots of good ideas for math instruction. Our first topic in math will be adding and subtracting numbers to 18. Practice those math facts at home. We are finishing up our topics on addition and subtraction and moving into place value, with ones, ten, and hundreds. Please continue to study those math facts at home daily!

Social Studies - We will continue to talk about being good citizens all year long. We are studying famous people including Johnny Appleseed and Christopher Columbus. We just finished a unit on Fire Prevention. Our next social studies unit will be "People and Government." We will be learning about community leaders, rules, laws, choosing our leaders, and citizens working together.

Congratulations, Good Citizens!
