Awesome Second Graders!
Welcome to the fall of the year! Remember to send coats with your child. It has been very nippy already, and we will go outside on cold days.
Math- In math we are focusing on adding and subtracting with regrouping, and adding money. We use the Weekly Essentials each week to spiral learning in class. All students are being exposed to various skills in math. One of our weak areas are working with patterns. We will assess our students using questions from the NC Math Essentials Curriculum provided by the county. We will review the areas of concern with your child, but they will not come home. The assessments will be filed in their permanent records. If you would like to know how your child did, you may set up a time for a conference for us to review together.
Social Studies- We are working on map skills and cardinal directions in our social studies unit.
Reading- We finished our Nature Walk unit and studied fables last week. This week we have begun the novel "The Chocolate Touch". With this comes challenging vocabulary and concepts to learn. The students always enjoy this novel study.
Spelling/ Writing- Look for the spelling contract weekly. The students will also take tests on the high frequency list. We will write every day. It is very important that what we do in school is followed up at home, so please check homework for correct spelling, neat handwriting, capital letters, and complete sentences. Have your child correct his/her work before turning it in. These are the things we must mastered to become better writers.
Science- We dissected our first strawberry plant on Friday. We weighed it (14 grams), measured the crown length, leaf and stem length, and root length. The students recorded the data and wrote a review of our scientific inquiry in their strawberry books.
