We use a card flip discipline plan in our classroom.  Students begin everyday with an "A" for conduct.  We believe everyday is a new day, and everyone deserves a fresh start.  If a child does not meet the expectations set forth by our school wide behavior guidelines they will be asked to flip a card.  Any teacher, resource teacher, or faculty member may flip a child's card.  Verbal/Nonverbal warnings are given prior to a card flip.

Incentives for good behavior:

Treats (fruit snacks, candies, etc.)

Stickers

Pencils

Consequences for card flips are as follows:

Color Blue = A (a great day!)

Color Green = B (a warning)

Color Purple = C (student /teacher conference)

Color Yellow = D (note or phone call home)

Color Pink = F (parent, teacher, student conference  and/or a referral)

Class Behavior

Last Thursday Jan. 15, 2009 we celebrated our second Manatee Mix and Mingle party.  It was a "Chip" mingle featuring Chips and Chocolate Chip cookies.

Manatee Ice Cream Sundae Mix and Mingle: The purpose of this contest is for the children to earn an ice cream sundae party by winning points for positive behavior. There will be a jar in the classroom.  When the students are caught being good as a class, a fuzzy will be put in the jar. Once the jar is full, the students will then earn a Manatee Ice cream Mix and Mingle.  After the class has earned the Ice Cream Sundae Social, they choose the next class incentive to work towards.

Manatee Warm and Fuzzies can be rewarded for the following:

Compliments from other adults

Following Directions

Hallway Behavior

Lunchroom Behavior

Resource Behavior

Restroom Behavior

Assembly Behavior

Field Trip Behavior

Homework Policy

We never assign homework that isn't important.  Students have four assignments each night:

1. Read One book or parts of a chapter book each night and log it on your book log in your R.E.D. folder.

2. Study no excuses words

3. Study high frequency words and vocabulary words for the selection we are reading in the core comprehension reader. (reading book)

4. Study spelling words.

5.  Math will be assigned based on gains made during math class that day.

There is no regular homework assigned on Friday.  NOTE: We do not assign specific spelling assignments for homework because children learn in different ways.  Some might learn them best by doing three times each, while others need something more hands-on such as typing them on the computer.  Most importantly please make sure your child knows what the words mean.  It is very important that they not only can spell the words, but they can use them in their writing and daily speech.

Bathroom Policy

Students may use the bathroom in our classroom as long as we are not in the middle of a whole group lesson. Students must write their name on our bathroom log everytime the use the bathroom.

Meet the Teachers!

Mrs. Pam Vavruska today!  My best friend and I got married this summer in South Dakota on a beautiful ranch.

Originally from Miami, Florida I have lived in Jacksonville almost my entire life.  I have been teaching second grade in Duval County for 5 years and this will be my second year at ELA.  I have worked as an educator at several non-profit organizations in Hawaii and here in Jacksonville.  I must say my true calling is the classroom.  I love running, cooking, and competing my labrador retrievers Trigger and Addy with my husband Kraig.  When I am not working on school work you can find me most likely relaxing with friends or on the water.
