WELCOME TO MS. YENCHO'S SECOND GRADE CLASS!

I am very excited about the start to our new year.  The students have done a fabulous job working together and following classroom rules and procedures.  We will begin the school year building commUNITY in our classroom.  Many of you know each other already and I am sure you are as excited as I am to meet new friends and families this year. 

READING: We have started the year with a whole class unit on the Marc Brown Arthur series. We will be following up with some fun projects and writing activities that supplement this reading. After that, students will be placed into reading groups and we will continue the process of developing strong reading skills and comprehension.

SCIENCE: We will begin our year with a study of the Monarch Butterfly. We will be receiving larva (small caterpillars) which we will be observing as they change throught the lifecycle into butterflies.   We will also learn about the life cycle of plants.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We will begin our year learning about maps and where we live.

MATH: We began our math studies by reviewing the calendar and by beginning our count of the 100 days of school.  We will be using coins to count the days.  We will share and graph information about what months everyone was born.

WRITING: We began our Writing Workshop by writing about our feelings the first few days of school.  During this time each day, we will be focusing on the five traits of the writing process: FOCUS, ORGANIZATION, ELABORATION, FLUENCY, AND CONVENTIONS.
