                  2nd Grade Class News and Notes

January 5 – 9, 2009

Welcome back to school and Happy New Year!  I hope it was a joyous Christmas holiday filled with special family memories.  I especially thank each of you for all your kind and generous gifts.  I felt truly honored.  Our student of the week is Kade McElroy.

 

January Book Report: Due on Friday, January 23.  

Topic: Nonfiction, animal book.

Read an AR book, so that a quiz may also be taken.

 

Religion –  We will be finishing up Unit 4 on “Jesus is Coming” with Bible stories of Jesus in the temple as a baby and again at 12 years old.  Unit 4 quiz on Friday.

 

Memory work:  Children will write their memory work, with fill in the blanks on Friday.

 Within Your temple, O God, we meditate on Your unfailing love.  Psalm 48:9

 

 Math:  Lessons #71 through 75. Areas to be covered: subtracting 10 from a two-digit number, measuring to the nearest half inch, adding two-digit numbers with a sum greater than 100; ordering 3 digit numbers from least to greatest; subtraction facts; subtracting 3; identifying gallon, half-gallon, quart and liter containers.

 

Reading:  Our reading theme this week is “A Trip to the Firehouse.” It’s about a group of children who visit their neighborhood firehouse and learn all about how firefighters do their jobs. We will also focus on writing a friendly letter and identifying the 5 main parts in a friendly letter, and begin reading the book Song Lee and the Leech Man.

 

Phonics:  Define and identify a consonant digraph, two consonants that together stand for one sound.  This week: sh, th, wh, ch, ck.

 

Spelling Words: 16 words: ay and ai;  ey and ea words:  train, tray, mail, play, trail, pay, sail, hay, nail, rain, they, great, snail, subway, stay, day.

 

Shurley English:  Practice jingles – noun, verb, adverb, adjective; Unit 1 Group 9 sentence pattern. Quiz on Friday.

 

Handwriting:  Write memory work and the letter P, p.

 

Science:   Unit 2 – Begin Chapter 3: Force, Magnets, and Electricity

 

Social Studies: Unit 3:Working Together- Countries Trade & Move Goods, and Bartering
