                    August and September Plans

Welcome to the fourth grade! I am Mrs. Crockett, your child’s fourth grade teacher.  I look forward to working with your child.   I will be sending home monthly plans and a calendar of events at the beginning of each month to let you know what we are doing for the month.

I feel that it is important for you to be aware of your child’s work.  Therefore, on Thursday or Friday your child will be bringing home the seat work, quizzes, tests and other related activities that he/she has completed during the week and which we have checked.  This material will be in their yellow “Friday Folder”  It will be most beneficial to you and your child if you will look at these papers together.  It  will aid you in discovering what your child is learning at school.  Please sign “student work dittos” so that I know you have seen your child’s work, sign your initials in the folder, and return.  I will also give you a brief note as to how your child did during the week.  Thank you for your assistance and your cooperation with this folder.  (Please note that much of the daily and weekly seat work your child has completed will be in their subject folders which will be collected at the end of the unit.  The children should be taking the subject folders home nightly to study or to complete unfinished work.)

Your child may bring in a water bottle.  This is a privilege and only water can be brought in because of the carpet.  Please bring in a sweat shirt or sweater with your child's name on it.

Our plans are:

We will be getting acquainted our first week together.

Written composition will be integrated into all subjects especially in reading and social studies, and you may see it called ILA (Integrated Language Arts).  We will begin with Functional Writing and then we will be working with narrative elements where we will be writing narrative paragraphs.

In reading we will get acquainted with our anthology and begin our first theme unit- “You Can Do It”.

In math we will work with Everyday Mathematics and our first unit will be “Naming and Constructing Geometric Figures.”  We’ll have homework almost every night.  Our students need to know their addition and subtraction basic facts for this unit but also please be sure that your child knows their multiplication facts through 9 as we will soon be working with multiplication.

We’ll be using the “Harcourt” spelling program.  We will have a list of words that may be adjusted in number according to the needs of each individual.  We will have homework everyday with a spelling test on Friday.  Please encourage your child to study and do their homework each night in their spelling composition notebook and bring this notebook back to school each day to be checked.

In science we will begin our unit on Drugs.  We will have a folder which will be collected and an assessment at the end of the unit somewhere around the end of September.

We will be studying about Maryland prior to the 15th Century in social studies.  Mrs. Houck will be teaching this subject and will begin at the end of September.   We will keep a notebook on this material and students will be assessed throughout the unit.

Homework Pad:  Your child will write down their homework each day and I will stamp it.  Please read this homework pad each night, check to see that your child has completed his/her homework, and then please sign the homework pad.  I check it each day to see that it has been signed.Homework pads ($5.00) are sold at the school store if you do not already have them.

We go outside everyday if it is not raining so please be sure your child has appropriate shoes so that they can run around and play.

I am looking forward to meeting you at the PTA Open House on Wednesday, September 10th to explain our curriculum and other details related to your child.

Have a great month and if you have any concerns, please call me at school (410-638-4190), write a note on your child’s homework pad or email me at  Karen.Crockett@hcps.org and I will respond as soon as possible.        Karen Crockett
