Mrs. Black's Third Grade

Happy New Year!  Thank you so much for the thoughtful Christmas gifts and comments.  I sent the students e-mails thanking them.

The first semester ends 1/16/09.  Make sure all "fix and return" work is turned in before the 16th and that all your Accelerated Reader books are passed.  Turn in your December "Book It" slip ASAP.

Guinea Pig:

Corredora would love to come and visit your home -- just write a note in your child's planner to schedule one.

FYI --  Please share the following link with businesses that might be willing to donate to our class request for a wireless mic/PA system.  So far, we have had a group donate $150 toward the project. http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=230608

Reading:  This week our story is "Night Letters."  It focuses on drawing conclusions, word structure and asking questions.  The vocabulary words are:  blade, flutter, fireflies, patch, dew, budding, and notepad.  The comprehension and vocabulary test will be on Thursday, 1/8.  Don't forget to go to the Walke website for activities.

Spelling:  Our words contain the /j/ and /k/ sounds.  Make sure your child practices writing them in cursive.  Don't forget to go to www.spellingcity.com to practice.  The test will be on Friday, 1/9 on the following words:  clock, large, page, mark, kitten, judge, crack, edge, pocket, brake, change, ridge, jacket, badge, orange, freckles, advantage, pledge, Kentucky, and kingdom.

Language:  Subject/verb agreement

Math:  Continue Investigations unit called "Collections and Travel Stories" based on addition, subtraction and the number system (larger numbers).

Social Studies:  Begin the Northeast Region.  Map test will be on Tuesday, 1/13 and the capital test will be on Wednesday, 1/14.

Science:  Begin a unit on matter (solids, liquids, gases, and their properties).

Special classes (9:15-10:00 daily) for this week are:

Monday - Music

Tuesday - PE

Wednesday - Computer lab/library

Thursday - Music

Friday - PE
