Mrs. Black's News

Nov. 2-6, 2009

NEEDS:  weekly volunteers to purchase 5 dz. crickets and 5 dz. guppies for our pets (just send a note in the planner if you'd like to help out).

Don't forget to send in Sunny D labels, Boxtops, and spare change for pets.

BENCHMARK TESTING:  Students are taking on-line Acuity Benchmark tests in reading, math, science and social studies.  After the tests, activities are assigned to help them improve weak areas.  Students may work on the activities at home by going to www.acuityathome.com .  I have put a link to the website on edline as well.

CONGRATULATIONS to Emily Browning for being our October Spotlight Student.

The trick or treat graphs were out of this world great!  Thanks for showing off your math knowledge.

READING:  This week our story is "Tops and Bottoms."  The focused skills are:  author's purpose, predicting, and using context clues.  The vocabulary words are:  bottom, cheated, clever, crops, lazy, partners, wealth, cornstalk, and debt.  The comprehension and vocabulary test will be Thursday, November 5th.

SPELLING:  This week our words contain spl, thr, squ, and str.  Our test will be Friday, November 6th on the following words:  splash, throw, three, square, throat, strike, street, split, splurge, thrill, strength, squeak, throne, strawberry, squeeze, squid, squander, arthritis, instrument, and strategy.

LANGUAGE:   Singular possessive nouns (to show that an animal, a person or a thing owns something).

MATH:  Finish unit on data collection and analysis.  Next week, we'll start a new unit on perimeter, angles and area.  Don't forget to use the Flashmaster nightly and return it and the form on Thursday, 11/5.

SCIENCE:  Continue unit on rocks and minerals.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  We are learning the states and capitals of the Southwest Region.  There will be a map test on Monday, Nov. 2nd and a capital test on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd.  I have several games on the Social Studies page of Edline that will help in studying for the tests.

Our special classes are from 1:30-2:15 daily.  This week our schedule will be:

Monday - PE
Tuesday - computer lab/library
Wednesday - music
Thursday - PE
Friday - computer lab/library

Corradora (the class guinea pig) was thrilled with all the offers to spent time with your families.  If your family would like to have her visit, just write a note in the planner (even if you have already had the pleasure of her company).  Corradora will visit the following families:

11/6 - Olivia Hart
11/13 - Natalie Neville
11/20 - Bryce Underwood
