We've had 2 completers of the online book study.  Congratulations Sheila and Rhonda!!!  Their reflections indicate that they learned many strategies to help them as they teach writing...  I loved reading the reflections and providing them feedback!  This is one of my favorite types of professional learning (strategically reading a professional resource and adapting what I'm learning to present situations).  If you want to join the course, register at www.hgresa.org Teaching Adolescent Writers.  It's FREE, and you can earn 3 PLUs if you are within the HGRESA area.

Jeffrey Dillard will conduct the second part of the GDOE workshop after Christmas (dates to be determined).  The first part related to narrative and personal response to literature.  The second session will address informational and persuasive writing.  Watch for dates!

***

If you are uncertain about standards based classrooms, there is a rubric that can guide your efforts.  It's found in the Implementation Resource Guide that on the GDOE's school improvement website.  I'll be glad to send you a copy via your request.

Please remember that all teachers can participate in the GA Movie Academy projects and Promote GA projects that the ETC center is sponsoring.  It doesn't just have to be the technology teachers.  Please contact Aleph Fore or Rae Spradley for information.  You must attend a workshop to get trained.  This is a GREAT opportunity for your students to participate in performance based activities.  There are so many students that love project-based learning activities.

***

Please show you care...share...  By empowering teachers with independent learning opportunities and providing them with resources and additional strategies for their "teaching toolboxes," we touch the future of so many students.

***

Please don't forget the power of read alouds and shared readings ...everyday!  Read alouds can encompass books, articles, poems, song lyrics (school appropriate), etc.  Use read alouds to help build background knowledge.  We need to incorporate think-alouds in all subjects - making those abstract reading and/or thinking processes concrete for students.

***

Idea:  Have you considered beginning a GA Reads program at your school, but letting it read (your school name) Reads like Bibb Reads?  Take pictures of your teachers, students, staff members, etc. reading their favorite books.  Post these in the hall, or place them on your morning television program or on a slideshow on your website.  You could have a tab on your website that was called Celebrity Readers at ______.  You could simply create bookmarks with the pictures of your celebrities and their favorite books.  You could take the pictures of the students, teachers, staff members, etc. holding their favorite books and paste these in front or back of the book in the media center.

You could also let the readers create a podcast.  All it takes is a computer, microphone, and download software (like audacity).  You can also do a Vodcast which includes the video and audio.  If you conduct a google search on these topics, you'll find step by step directions.  Once you've created the electronic files of your "celebrity" readers, you can save them on your server, and they can be accessed.  Podcasts are not hard to do!!!  Students can create podcasts demonstrating what they have learned.  Podcasts are a wonderful type of performance task.

Dr. Belita Gordon conducted Writing Across the Curriculum workshops this week for elementary, middle, and high school teachers.  She introduced teachers to the following 3 minute pause strategy:  http://www.readingquest.org/strat/3mp.html.  She discussed differences between interesting information and important information. Her presentation included the importance of teaching students how to paraphrase and summarize.  If you would like to learn more about summarizing, quoting, and/or paraphrasing, please refer to some of the websites below.  One strategy that she also shared included taping a student's paper to a larger sheet of paper and teaching the students how to use the space surrounding the paper to make major changes inclusive of introduction and conclusion revisions, or adding sentences, etc.  She also discussed the importance of collecting mentor texts - texts that include wonderful examples of the skills and concepts that you may be trying to teach.  Dr. Gordon will conduct sessions next week on learning how to score papers.  These sessions target elementary and middle school teachers; however, much of the middle school session will be applicable to high school teachers (learning to score persuasive papers).

Are you familiar with word ladders?  I've mentioned these in the past.  If you are unsure about what word ladders are, then you might want to do a search.  Tim Rasinski referenced these during a conference session in Perry.

****

If you are unsure of the difference between a read aloud and a shared reading, then you might want to do a search.  Author Janet Allen has written extensively on this topic.  Both are important!!!

****

Go to the following website:  http://www.georgiastandards.org/
Select a grade.
Select a subject.
Click search.
This will take you to a list of the standards and elements for the subject
and grade level that you have selected.
Then click on the standard which is blue.  You will be taken to aligned
units, tasks, activities, and resources for the selected standard.

****

Reminder for 9th Grade ELA Teachers:  The HGRESA will provide the writing assessment that will be given to 9th grade students after the Thanksgiving holidays. We are currently working with Dr. Gordon to finalize plans.  The papers will be scored just like the 11th grade writing assessment by the GA Assessment Center raters in Athens.  The scores will be returned to the schools.  This benchmark data will give teachers information to help students as they prepare for the high school writing assessment.

9-7-08

PLEASE, let's continue to emphasize the RPMs preventative program.  (Raise performance, master standards)  Let's use the data to find out which students are struggling readers.  Then, let's establish a plan for helping these students.  Progress should be monitored regularly to determine if the strategies are working.  We must model effective reading strategies every day!  Attend reading workshops to learn effective strategies.  Read this website to find strategies that can be used.  Read professional books.  Read professional journals.  (Don't forget about interest inventories to help you match students - books.)

****

The response to the reading sessions that are being offered has been tremendous.  We currently have 22 to 30 participants per session.  If you are interested in any of the sessions, don't procrastinate on registering!  Carol Hartley (GDOE) will present the sessions.

****

We also have a DIBELS 2 session scheduled. If you've received Dibels I training, then we encourage you to register for this session.  This session will deal with, now that I've dibeled, what do I do with the data.  What does the data tell me?  How can I use the data to drive instruction?

****

Administrators and Teachers:  OAS math items (grades 1-8) have been emailed to schools.  (Electronic files)

****

Reminder:  FREE 3 PLU ONLINE BOOK STUDY (Topic - Writing); For info, please contact Janice at jbeck@hgresa.org or at ext. 143.

****

Please go to the top of this page and click on notify me.  Add teachers from your school. The information on this website needs to be shared.  Even though it may not be an attractive page, it lets you know about websites that might be helpful.

WELCOME BACK!!!  We hope you've had a restful, peaceful summer filled with family and friends.  As the new year begins, please remember that we are available to assist you in your efforts to Raise Performance/Master Standards.  (RPMs)  Please make a commitment to share this website with all teachers and parapros at your school.  Show them how to add their names and email.  Thanks for your help.  We can't always be in your system, or in your school, or in your classroom, but we can share powerful resources via this website.  I'm trying to organize the resources at projectrpms.org; however, it is currently under construction.  I'll try to keep you posted when it's up and running.

The GADOE GPS 9-12th Content Literacy training scheduled in October has been cancelled.  We received notification Wednesday.

Dr. Jill Slack's Questioning Workshop has been cancelled.

Also, Dr. Jill Slack's Struggling Reader Workshop has been cancelled.  Dr. Slack has received a wonderful job opportunity and will soon be moving to that new position.  We've loved having Dr. Slack work with us for approximately 10 years.  Our goal was to build capacity in the questioning area.  There are MANY teachers throughout our HGRESA area that have received this wonderful training from Dr. Slack.  Please seek them out in your schools.  Let's keep Dr. Slack's passion for examining the types of questions that we as teachers ask - alive!  We will miss Dr. Slack's assistance, but we wish her much luck and success as the next chapter of her professional life unfolds.... She has added this page to her favorites, so she will be able to keep up with us.  Thank you, Dr. Slack, for the assistance that you have given to us through the years.  Your passion to help has been so evident.

6/28/08  We had 2 wonderful train the trainer sessions this week.  Lisa Davis and Freida McGhee (GDOE) conducted the middle/high session, and Carol Hartley and Debbie Barton (GDOE) conducted the elementary session. Approximately 60 teachers participated in the Struggling Readers' Workshops which lasted 4 days.  The GDOE staff members did a GREAT job sharing strategies, research, and resources throughout the week. Trainers left with resources to lead study groups and/or professional learning communities throughout the year on the following components:  phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary/word study, fluency, and comprehension.  Participants learned about the critical features of instruction.  Throughout the week, teachers reflected on the adaptations framework.  The Heart of Georgia RESA would like to thank Deborah Haney, Lisa Davis, Freida McGhee, Carol Hartley, and Debbie Barton for doing such a wonderful job!  We would also like to thank the participants for giving 4 days of their summer vacation to LEARN how to help struggling readers.  WOW!!!  These participants will help the HGRESA build additional reading capacity as they go forth and train other teachers.    We would also like to thank Janice Beck for her tremendous support throughout the week...

6/26/08  We had a GREAT reading across the content workshop 2 weeks ago.  Thanks - Betty, Linda, and Cindy - for sharing your nonfiction reading strategies with us.  Throughout the two days, the GDOE facilitators shared over 60 reading strategies for teachers to use with students during the stages of before, during, or after reading phases.  The presenters provided hands-on activities for the teachers to practice the strategies.  Participants included media specialists, Board member, retired principal, special education teachers, English teachers, reading teacher, math teacher, paraprofessional, and science teachers.  The HGRESA would like to thank Betty, Linda, and Cindy for doing a wonderful job!  We would also like to thank the participants for giving 2 days of their summer vacation to LEARN how to help students with reading across the content areas.  WOW!!!     We would also like to thank Janice Beck for her assistance with the workshop preparations.

6/28/08 HGRESA area teachers can receive 3 PLUs free beginning July 1.  (There is a cost for out of area teachers.)  The registration is online.  Go to www.hgresa.org.  Click on professional learning on the left.  This takes you to a list of courses.  At the very top, click on Professional Learning (click here for PLU credit).  This takes you to the ABC sign-up for PLU credits.  This is an ONLINE book study using Kelly Gallagher's book Teaching Adolescent Writers.  After strategically reading each chapter, participants will complete assigned tasks.  Participants will have 2 months to complete the course. Time logs are required and completed tasks will be reviewed.  Feedback will be provided.  We're excited about this format.  This is the first course that has been developed in this format, so this is an action research type of project.  If this is successful, we will develop additional courses using this format.  This is an attempt to address the different learning styles of teachers.  If you have any questions, please email connie@hgresa.org or jbeck@hgresa.org.  (Suggestions for other online book studies can be submitted to connie@hgresa.org.)

1 FREE PLU available for the summer:  Reading in the Content Areas - Effective Reading Strategies (Target - Middle School Science Teachers)  June 18 and 19  from 8:30-3:30.  Call Janice Beck at 478.374.2240 ext. 143 or email Janice at jbeck@hgresa.org for registration info.  Presenters:  Dr. Miriam Jordan, Dr. Betty Ellis

Contact Kimberley Bynoe at 800.401.5062 ext. 1702  or at 678-429-1593, if you are interested in learning more about the Headsprout Early Reading program.  She indicated at the GLRS RTI Fair that schools could receive 5 free licenses for 5 individual students to try/pilot the program.
*****
The GLRS RTI Vendor Fair was a huge success!  Terri Young, Amanda Amerson, and Crystal Hattaway coordinated the event.  Administrators and teachers were able to view different RTI options throughout the day.  They were also able to discuss the options with the product representatives.
*****
In planning for the 2008-2009 year, please remember to include MORE nonfiction into your read alouds and your unit lessons.  Find nonfiction books and articles that support your science, social studies, and math standards.  Reading First Schools are receiving nonfiction books (as part of their grant) that are correlated to the Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade Georgia Performance Standards at the element level (math, science, and social studies).  If you are interested in receiving a copy of these lists of books, please send me a request via email.
*****
Reading Teachers:  Reflect on the 2007-2008 year:
Did you incorporate think-alouds daily?
Did you incorporate read-alouds daily?
Did you incorporate non-fiction read alouds daily?
Did you incorporate shared readings?
Did you incorporate vocabulary building activities?  Did you incorporate prefixes, suffixes, root words?
Did your students write frequently?
Did you give your students enough time to practice reading skills?
Did you work on fluency building activities daily?
Could you verbalize how you taught comprehension?
Did you formatively assess the reading skills of your students?
Did you have more data than just required state level test data to help guide your instructional decisions? (Example - progress monitoring data, running records, DIBELS, etc.)
Did you use small-group instructional groups?
Did you think of more effective ways to help students practice reading skills other than round-robin reading?
There are many more reflective types of questions.  Create your own list based on best practices.  Have fun!

The Performance Fair held at Pulaski Middle School was a HUGE success!  Parents and community members had the opportunity to view performance tasks completed by the students.  Projects were on display that encompassed all content areas.  Students also presented historical related plays, as well as introduced audience members to several dances from the past. (like the Virginia Reel)  What an exciting night for the students, teachers, parents, and administrators!  This is the 3rd year that Pulaski Middle has coordinated this event.  (School Contacts - Staci Vickers, Tony Lester)

Thank you for requesting services from the HGRESA during the 07-08 school year.  Please let us know how we can assist you in your future efforts to help students.

CONGRATULATIONS, STUDENTS!!!

The HGRESA Awards/Service Learning Banquet was a huge success!  Thank you administrators, curriculum directors, all central office staff members, principals, teachers, parents, relatives, and students for supporting this event.  All participants received training from Mrs. Vickie Burt on service learning implementation in schools.

We currently have 2 schools in the HGRESA area that received grants - Bleckley Elementary and Pulaski Middle.  Representatives from both schools participated in the service learning part of the program and did a great job!  Bleckley County Elementary students prepared the table arrangements as part of their service learning initiatives.  (Thanks Bleckley County students, teachers, and Mrs. Townsend.  The flowers were beautiful!)

Service learning plans for next year include presenting Congressional and Presidential service learning awards.  Mrs. Burt has agreed to have a meeting with school level contacts concerning the components of earning these awards.  We will email details at a later date.

5-2-08

We had tremendous participation in Dr. Belita Gordon's Writing Workshops.  Approximately 100 teachers were trained over a 3 day period on how to help students pass the writing assessment.  (Moving up the Scale Score)  Thanks teachers and administrators for supporting these workshops.

Future plans include Writing across the Curriculum sessions - elementary, middle, and high school sessions in September.  There will also be a session for middle school teachers on learning how to rate papers.

We have also requested dates from (GDOE) Jeffrey Dillard, Leann Cornett, and Mary Stout.  They will give us dates as soon as they know available dates.  They are having to work around some required meeting dates.

 5-2-08

PLEASE remember Dr. Jill Slack is coming to the area in the Fall.  She will conduct a session on questioning strategies, as well as a session on the struggling reader for middle and high school sessions.

5-2-08

The response for the Struggling Reader Train the Trainer sessions (elementary session AND a middle/high session) has been GREAT!  Debbie Haney indicated that the classes are almost full.  WOW!!! Once again, thanks for the support. Hopefully, all systems have a representative attending that can redeliver.

5-2-08

Please remember that I'll be glad to facilitate a book study if any of your teachers or paraprofessionals need PLUs.
