Thanks for taking the time to come and review your child’s portfolio.  I know that the children have worked diligently this year, and sharing with you was an exciting experience.

Please send an empty Pringle’s Potato Chip Can by Friday, May, 22nd.  We will be making Time Capsules.  You child may also bring small mementoes to put in the capsule.  Pictures, grocery store receipts, stamps, pennies, trading card, ribbons are all possibilities.

All raw materials for the Business Fair product are due in class first thing Monday morning.  You all should have received an investor letter on Wednesday.  Please send receipts or a note with approximate cost of materials so I can help the children determine a reasonable price.  I did not hear from anyone, so I am assuming you all are able to purchase the items listed.  The Business Fair will take place in front of the school next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30-9:30.  You are invited to attend

DATE CHANGE:  Awards Ceremony will be on Wednesday, May 27th after announcements (8:15).  We will have our class party following.  Please send $2 for pizza by Friday, May, 22nd.

Thanks for your support during this very busy time!

Thanks so much for all the flowers, goodies, cards and poems.  I feel greatly loved and appreciated.  I especially enjoyed my early birthday celebration.  I will save my gift for a birthday dinner in Italy!

You received information about the Portfolio Picnics in the last two Tuesday folders.  I hope you are able to come.  You may come any day next week.  You may come and pick up your child anytime between 10:30 and 12:00.  You and your child will take his/her portfolio anywhere on the Roberts campus to reflect upon the work.  You may eat lunch with your child during this time if you wish.  If it is during our lunch time (10:55-11:25) your child will eat his/her lunch.  Please bring a blanket if you plan on sitting on the ground.  Return the portfolio, and I will send some work home and keep some to pass on to next year’s teacher.

Next week, your child will bring home an Investor letter asking for you to invest in his/her product for our American Dream planner.  As an investor, I ask that you purchase the raw materials listed on the letter and send the receipts to school.  We will use the cost to price the products.  Production will start on Monday, May 18th, so materials must be at school by then. If you can not act as an investor, please let me know, so that I can act as the investor for your child.

The 3rd grade classes will be setting up a Market on May 20, 21, 22 from 8:30-9:30 and the children will be selling their products to Robert’s students and interested parents. Through this real life experience, I will be working the children so that they understand pricing and profit, opportunity cost, supply and demand and other economic principles.  All profit will be donated to a cause of the children’s choice.

Next we will be using the laptops to publish our pourquoi stories.  We continue to read and meet in Literature Circles.  Our new Math unit is multi-digit multiplication.  We are currently testing out the probability games we created.

Please sign up to work the Carnival Booth!  The sign-up sheet is on our door.  All school dismissal for carnival on Friday!

Our Awards Ceremony will be on Tuesday, May 26th at 8:30.

Finally, please save your Pringles Potato Chip cans.  Clean them out, and send them to school with the tops.  We need them for a year end project!

The children have been working hard to prepare for the Math TAKS.  It will be given on Tuesday, April 28th.  It is a long and difficult test.  The children must be able to comprehend the problem and make a plan to solve it and then accurately complete the work.  Please make sure your child arrives at school on time, and is well-fed and well-rested.  I know you have been reviewing your child’s homework, and I hope you have noticed the “Parent Activity” on the bottom of the page.  These are great ideas to continue through out the summer.  You can also see how your child understands the math concepts and problems by carefully looking over the math sheets in the work folder.  As children master the concept being reviewed, they go on to Math Stations and I reteach the concepts with the children needing extra help. I hope all of our hard work will pay off on Tuesday!

Carnival is May 8th.  Please sign up for a shift.  There is a sign on our door.

We are having fun working on our Adaptation Planner.  The children did a fabulous job creating a new species and identifying adaptations that helped it survive in a specific environment.

Have a wonderful week!

School pictures will be taken tomorrow morning.  If you want to purchase a class photo you must prepay.

Camp Read A-Lot will take place in the afternoon. Please have your child bring a favorite picture book to share with his/her book buddy. The children may bring pajamas to change into.  They may also bring a blanket, pillow, and/or stuffed animal.

Math TAKS will be given on Tuesday, April 28th.  We are reviewing daily.  Please go over your child’s homework with him/her each evening.  These are the types of questions that will be on the test, and your child should be able to choose a strategy and solve the problem.  Showing work is extremely important.   Weekly multiplication fact quizzes will resume next week.  Your child should have all facts memorized.   If your child does not know the facts, 2 digit multiplication is very difficult.

Please make sure that your child continues to reads daily for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Remember, all school dismissal on Thursday at 3:00.  Have a wonderful holiday!

We will celebrate our Poetry Unit and Traditions Planner with our Winter Holiday Party on Friday, December 19th at 8:15 am.  We will start by sharing our published poetry. This should last until about 8:45.

Then we would like to have a traditions breakfast.  As you know our latest planner has been about tradition and culture.   Please send a favorite family or cultural food to share on the 19th.  Fill out the bottom of the letter and return it, so we know the variety of food we will have. (It doesn’t have to be a breakfast food!)  Since we will have many different foods just a small taste for each child is all we need. We will start the breakfast right after announcements.  Please come and celebrate our poetry and traditions!

Don’t forget the Third Grade Holiday Program will be held in the Café on December 17th at 6:30 pm!

Thanks so much for helping with the heritage dolls and stories.  They are wonderful.  We will be sharing our stories throughout the week.

I hope you can attend the 3rd Grade Invention Convention on Friday, November 21 from 8:30-9:00 in the Roberts Café. You will have the opportunity to see the children’s clever solutions to many problems and needs.

Our class will attend Book Fair on Wednesday from 1:40-2:10.

When we return from the Thanksgiving Holiday we will be starting a new planner on Traditions and Cultures. The children will be asking questions such as: Where did our family come from? When did we first come to America? Why did we come? How did we get here? What did we bring? Since you may have the opportunity to visit with relatives during the holiday, you may have the chance to explore some of these questions. Great-grandparents and grandparents often have interesting stories about “coming to America”. I know that some of you have come to America recently and have valuable stories to share.

Please make sure your child is reading for a minimum of 30 minutes daily. We will be starting multiplication this week, so it is important that the children know the addition math facts without counting on fingers!

Have a great week and a Happy Thanksgiving!
