Bonjour et Bienvenidos
French Club
Celebrate National French Week, Nov 4-10!!
Our next event will be Thurs, Nov 5 after school. We will be decorating t-shirts in celebration of National French Week (Nov 4-10). Please pay $5 on Monday to place the order for your t-shirt. The price will cover the t-shirt, supplies to decorate the shirts, and some snacks for the meeting.
French V
We will be studying the Passé composé and Imparfait this week.. Please look over your past notes about the formation and differences between the two tenses. I will not be re-teaching formation of the two tenses so please make sure you know how to form the tenses in order to use them.
We are now studying about Québec. Your group projects are due on Monday, Nov.9.
French I
Some of you still need to finish the Ch 1 test which can be made up in class on Mon. if you're ready.
We will be starting Ch. 2 this week. Look ahead and start learning the vocabulary.
Spanish II
We have already started the vocab. for CH 4.3. Make sure you're studying the vocab for possible quizzes this week. We'll also be reviewing "gustar" and beginning affirmative and negative words.
CLASS NECESSITIES FOR FRENCH AND SPANISH
All of the following materials NEED to be brought to class every day:
1. Notebook
2. 3-ring binder
3. Pen or pencil
4. Dictionary (French/English or
Spanish/English, depending upon the
class you are taking) This can be
left at home until instructed to
bring it to class.
5. Homework agenda book
6. Textbook - this must be covered at
all times.
7. Your willingness to participate!
CLASS RULES
1. It is important that everyone respect each other in the class. I usually don't find it necessary to have students raise hands, so please be respectful of others who are asking questions and wait until they're done until you ask your own question or contribute to the conversation.
2. Please be on time. There is ample time (5 mins.) between classes to travel from one room to another as well as a warning bell that signals 1 min. remaining. If you arrive to class late, it is considered a tardy. After 2 tardies, each tardy counts as an absence. Remember, if you receive 22 absences for the year, you lose credit for the course. We don't want that to happen to anyone!
3. Bathroom/water breaks will be kept to a minimum. If you need to use the bathroom, please come to class BEFORE THE BELL HAS RUNG and let me know you're running out for a minute and will be right back. This will eliminate disruptions in the middle of lessons. Exceptions can be made for emergencies when necessary.
4. Always bring all materials to class every day. The dictionaries can stay at home unless I ask you to bring them in on a specific day, but everything else should be with you at all times.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance is extremely important in a world language classroom. During the block we will be speaking in the target language, listening to authentic music, watching cultural DVDs, and having fun with the languages. All of this is very difficult to make up after school. Please try your best to be in school so that you can participate fully in an enriching language program.
If you absolutely need to stay home, a secretary's report will be created for you during class. This will be written by a classmate of yours who will take notes on everything that happened during the block. It will also list any quizzes, tests, etc. that you may have missed. It will then be your responsibility to see that all of the work is completed. Remember that you have 2 days to make up the work for every 1 day that you are absent.
ATTENDANCE BOX
Every Friday, every student who has been present for class all week will put his/her name into an "attendance box". I will draw one name from the box and that student will be able to choose a prize. The other names stay in the box for the following weeks of the marking period. Prizes include homework passes, extra credit on quizzes or tests, or bonus coupons for projects. Make sure you're here every day in order to have many chances at winning!
GRADING
The categories are as follows:
Homework (30%) - Never graded, but always checked. You will begin each marking term with a 100% homework average which is very easy to maintain throughout the term. Just do the homework, correct it with the class, and receive credit! It's that simple!
Quizzes ( 20%)- Be prepared for a quiz at any time. Not all quizzes will be announced, so if we've done something new on one day, study it at home with the thought that there will either be a quiz or a game (or both!)the following day.
Tests (10%) - Always announced ahead of time. If you have had trouble with the chapter quizzes, you should stop by for some extra help before the day of the test.
Projects (10%) - Some with groups and some individual, and some you choose! A great grade booster, so put extra effort into this portion of your grade!
Class participation/effort (30%) - Each week I calculate a participation and effort grade for the week. If you have been participating in class discussions, offering corrections on homework assignments, playing games and being a good teammate, and contributing positively to the class, you will receive an easy "A" every Friday for the preceeding week. However, if I have had to stop class in order to speak to you about bad behavior or if you have contributed negatively to the class, the grade on Friday will reflect that also. Let's keep it positive!!
Each grading category is extremely important, so it is essential that you keep updated as to your average and if you have any questions, come see me. I will gladly print out a copy of your grades for you to bring home and discuss with your parents.
