Miss Poole's Kindergarten

May and June
As the school year ends we will be discussing ocean animals, their habitats, prey and characteristics. We will make several sea creatures and write stories about them. We will also learn about a new sea creature each day. Be sure to ask you child what animal they learned about today!

We also have lots going on!

May 25th - No School - Memorial Day
May 28th and 29th - Luau Rotations
These days will be grade level centers and children will move from room to room learning about ocean and luau themed things.
June 1 - Water Day
This is a fun day in the water! Look for more information to come home soon!
June 3 - Movie Day!
June 4th - Field Day!
June 5th - Donuts for Dad
Dad's are invited for breakfast in the child's classroom in celebration of Father's Day.

Reading/Language Arts

We will be discussing fiction and non-fiction this month. We will sequence stories and events and read factual books about the ocean and its animals.

Popcorn Words

Popcorn words are words that "pop" up everywhere in our reading. These are sight words the students need to know to become good readers.

what     she     I*    a*     is*     it*     in*
me     we     be*     he*     go     to*    when
my     see     the*     like     am     you*     and*     this*     said     that*     at*   of*    than    for*   on*    was*     with*    from*    look     here    they*     are*   have*    his*   as*   play

* words will be tested at the end of the year

 Writing
We are well on our way to writing some great stories!
Some things to know:

1 - Students should have a picture at the top of their paper and "words" at the bottom.
  2 - In the picture :
A) People should not float! There should be a ground!
B) People should not be spiders! They need a body!
C) Ask you child to add details!
3 - Let students sound out words on their own! Help students sound out words but do not spell them for them!
For example - Instead of spelling 'butterfly' help your child sound it out! They will probably come up with "btrfi". That is wonderful! We want the beginning and ending sound!
4 - Sight words should be spelled correctly!

Math
In math we are measuring. We are working on long and short, longest, shortest, putting items in order by length and measuring using non-traditional items, such as cubes, blocks, crayons and bear counters.

We are also working on sharing items equally between two people, and are concentrating on numbers 21 - 30, though we are constantly reviewing!
We have been building on ten frames and learning how to group in tens.

COUNT OUT LOUD TO 100!
Several students in our class have made it this far!
Way to go!
Keep up the hard work!

We also need to work on naming and describing shapes!

Although we discuss all the above shape and all are important, focus learning to the triangle, square, rectangle and circle. We also discuss the 3-D shapes sphere (ball) and cube (dice).
