Each student will be responsible for creating two pages of a book. One page will be an illustration and one page will be a paragraph about their topic. The paragraph will be 5-8 sentences long and will be hand-written on paper provided to the students. This will be completed in class. NO READING HOMEWORK Tuesday-Students will work in their table groups to create a map of their country. The map will include physical features such as landforms and political features such as cities. They will complete one map per group to display in the hall. This will be completed in class. NO READING HOMEWORK Wednesday-Students will create an individual Venn Diagram comparing the United States and their KYW country. This will be completed in class. NO READING HOMEWORK Thursday-Students will create a short story or comic strip. They will envision themselves as a resident in their KYW country. Students will portray a “Day in the Life” of a person living in the South American country their class is studying. This will be completed in class. Students will learn about basket weaving and the steps taken to complete a basket of their own. This will be completed in class. NO READING HOMEWORK Math
Monday-Lesson 3.6 Congruent Triangles Mental Math Reflexes Math Message Math Message Follow Up Journal pg. 75 Vocabulary - Equilateral, isosceles, scalene Readiness activity: Triangle sort Copying a triangle using any Available Tools Discuss congruent figures Students copy triangle BIG on journal pg. 76 Discuss possible ways of copying the triangle (see pg 185 in Teacher’s Lesson Guide for examples) Copying a triangle without a protractor Journal pg 77 Students work in partners to try to solve problem 1 without using a protractor Give students strips of paper and tape to work with Modeling a triangle Demonstrate how to make a copy of the triangle using strips of paper and tape (Cut the paper to match the sides of the triangle then tape the corners together (see pg. 186 for example) Copying a triangle with compass and straightedge only Have students read SRB pg 166 Assign problem 2 on pg. 77 in journal Journal pg. 78 Math boxes pg 79 Play Angle Tangle Homework: Study Link 3-6
Tuesday-Lesson 3-7: Properties of Polygons Mental Math Reflexes Math Message Math Message Follow-up Sorting Polygons by their properties Spread figures from Math Masters p 494 under document camera What are shapes called? Polygons. How do you know? Have students work in groups to develop a definition for a polygon using SRB pg 142 as reference. Share out using numbered heads together Demonstrate how to sort the polygons, have students guess your rule Students sort polygons using rule of their choice. Play Polygon Capture See SRB pg. 328 for directions Math Boxes 3-7 Homework: Study Link 3-7
Wednesday-Lesson 3-8: Regular Tessellations Mental Math Reflexes Math Message Math masters pg 89 Math Message Follow-Up Exploring Tessellations Read and discuss pg 160-161 in SRB Exploring Regular Tessellations Students use Geometry templates to draw examples of tessellations on pgs. 82 and 83 Discuss answers Look at the measure of the angles of the shapes that would and would not tessellate Polygon can be tessellated if the measure of its angle is a factor of 360 See Teacher’s guide pg 196 for further discussion points. Play Angle Tangle Math Boxes 3-8 Homework: Study Link 3-8
Thursday-Review Day NO HOMEWORK
Friday-Lesson 3-9: Angles of Polygons Mental Math Reflexes Math Message Math Message Follow Up Finding the Sums of Angels in Polygons Draw an example of a convex and a concave polygon on the board What statements can be made about the interior angles? Give students paper divided into four boxes labeled Polygons, Not Polygons, Convex Polygons, and Concave Polygons. 1 paper per group Have students draw at least 2 figures for each group. Use RoundRobin Write Assign each group to work on either Quadrangles or Pentagons, have them circle the appropriate item on the top of journal pg. 85 Students complete journal pgs 85 and 86. Finding the median for the sums of angles Journal pg 87 Dividing Polygons into triangles Journal pg. 88 Finding angle sums for any polygon Find relationship between the number of sides of a polygon and the number of triangles that the polygon can be divided into Journal pg. 89, Rally Coach Practicing Expanded Notation with Decimals Journal pg. 90, Rally Coach Math Boxes 3-9 Homework: Study Link 3-9
Social Studies/Science We will complete three lessons this week on Landforms. Day One (Monday for all classes)- We will complete a lesson on Using Elevation Maps from our social studies book. Students will complete page 7 from the activity book in class. Homework: Complete activity book pgs. 1 and 8 (this is a front and back sheet of paper)
Day Two (Wednesday for Giggy and Davis, Thursday for Adams)- We will make a physical model of our playground birds-eye view sketches. We will use trays, sand, and individual blocks to make our models. We will discuss transferring a drawing to a physical model. Homework: Complete the response sheet in the landforms packet titled “Schoolyard Models.” Write at least one paragraph stating your opinion and why you feel that way. Be sure to support your answer!
Day Three (Thursday for Giggy and Davis, Friday for Adams)-We will build foam mountain models of Mount Shasta. Students will complete the Topographic Map, Mountain Map, Profile, and Contours and Intervals sheets in class (these are in their Landforms packets). Homework: Students will read a short article about Mount Shasta, then answer comprehension questions about the article. Math Extensions: Students will work on geometry this week. Reading Extensions: We will work on our KYW projects this week. Writing: Students will work on their Writer’s Workshop projects during writing this week. |
