WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE!

                   BUCKET FILLERS

Have You Filled a Bucket Today? This year we are going to be bucket fillers!

The idea of Bucket Fillers is based on the book "How Full Is Your Bucket" by Tom Rath. There are also several children's books. One is
"Have You Filled A BucketToday? (A Guide to Daily Happiness For Kids)" by Carol McCloud. The premise of the book is this...

We all carry an invisible bucket that contains our feelings. When our bucket is full,we feel great. When our bucket is empty, we feel sad. A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people's buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time.

On the other hand, a bucket dipper says or does things to cause other people to feel bad. A bucket dipper empties their bucket when they say and do mean things.

In our classroom, each student has a bucket in our writing center mailboxes. Everyone is encouraged to fill the buckets by writing kind words and compliments to each other. At the end of the week, we empty the buckets and read the nice things our friends left for us when they filled our buckets.

LA/Reading - We will be reading selections from both our science and social studies textbooks. These passages will be about natural resources and recycling. These stories tie in to our Social Studies and Science unit of natural resources and recycling. This goes along with our projects that we are working on.

Writing -  We will discuss homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings). Spelling words will be homophones. Complete spelling log each night. Choose different activities each night!

Homophone spelling words: their-there, to-too-two, new-knew, threw-through, write-right, some-sum, see-sea, hear-here

We are still writing five finger CHEESEBURGER stories! This means include details (gloop and glob) with each action!

1. Beginning-who, what, when, where
2. Action #1
3. Action # 2
4. Action # 3
5. Ending- Tell a feeling

Math - We will working on double digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will focus on the importance of starting in the ones place to work a math problem. We will also take sometime to work on a math assessment in small groups to see what we have learned so far this year. We will also work with AM (accelerated math). Ask your child about it!

SS/Science - We are working hard on our new unit of study, Natural Resources and Recycling. Students will be brainstorming ways to get the whole school involved in their recycling project.

Technology - We will continue to practice math facts on the computer.

We will be working on patterns using KidPix. We will also be using Kidspiration for various activities.

*Your child has been practicing answering questions verbally in complete sentences. In class, they are expected to respond to questions in a complete sentence using the question as part of their response. For example, if asked “What is your favorite color?” students should respond “My favorite color is ...” This will help students in their writing because they are expected to write in complete sentences.
PLEASE encourage your child to use complete sentences when speaking at home as well so that this will become a habit!

*** Please send in all soda tabs with your child to support the Ronald McDonald House.  Ask all friends, co-workers and family to save tabs for Mt. Ulla Elem.

***  We are encouraging our students to recycle and reuse.  We would like for the students to bring in your newspapers, cans, plastic bottles(rinsed), and grocery bags.

***  Send in all  Boxtops (friends and families also) for cash for Mt. Ulla school.
