Parents,
Valentines will be passed out this Friday, February 12. Please be sure your child turns their valentines in by Friday. Remember to send one to every child so we will not have any hurt feelings.
Please remember to review the first 100 words on the High Frequency Word list that was sent home earlier in the year. We  are working on the first 75 words this quarter. The children will be asked to recognize and spell these words from memory. Also, when reading with your child each night remember to ask questions about the story to check for understanding. If your child can't answer the questions then they may just be reading the words but not understanding what they have just read. This is a hard thing for first graders to do. They should be able to close a book that they just read  and retell the story to you without having to read or look back at the pictures for clues. In this retelling they need to tell the characters and their names, the setting of the story, the problem in the story and how it was solved. They
should also be able to retell the story in the order that it happened. This is an area that we will focus on all year because they must be able to do this in order to be able to understand and use what has been read. Thanks for all of your help from home in this important area.
